07141d4081 mm/Kconfig: forcing allocators to return ZONE_DMA32 memory
Add a new config item, CONFIG_FORCE_ALLOC_FROM_DMA_ZONE, which
can be used to optionally force certain allocators to always
return memory from ZONE_DMA32.

This option helps ensure that clients who require ZONE_DMA32
memory are always using ZONE_DMA32 memory.

6dd6325deb mm: introduce per-process mm event tracking feature
Linux supports /proc/meminfo and /proc/vmstat stats as memory health metric.
Android uses them too. If user see something goes wrong(e.g., sluggish, jank)
on their system, they can capture and report system state to developers
for debugging.

It shows memory stat at the moment the bug is captured. However, it’s
not enough to investigate application's jank problem caused by memory
shortage. Because

1. It just shows event count which doesn’t quantify the latency of the
application well. Jank could happen by various reasons and one of simple
scenario is frame drop for a second. App should draw the frame every 16ms
interval. Just number of stats(e.g., allocstall or pgmajfault) couldn't
represnt how many of time the app spends for handling the event.

2. At bugreport, dump with vmstat and meminfo is never helpful because it's
too late to capture the moment when the problem happens.
When the user catch up the problem and try to capture the system state,
the problem has already gone.

3. Although we could capture MM stat at the moment bug happens, it couldn't
be helpful because MM stats are usually very flucuate so we need historical
data rather than one-time snapshot to see MM trend.

To solve above problems, this patch introduces per-process, light-weight,
mm event stat. Basically, it tracks minor/major faults, reclaim and compaction
latency of each process as well as event count and record the data into global
buffer.
To compromise memory overhead, it doesn't record every MM event of the process
to the buffer but just drain accumuated stats every 0.5sec interval to buffer.
If there isn't any event, it just skips the recording.
For latency data, it keeps average/max latency of each event in that period

With that, we could keep useful information with small buffer so that
we couldn't miss precious information any longer although the capture time
is rather late. This patch introduces basic facility of MM event stat.

After all patches in this patchset are applied, outout format is as follows,
dumpstate can use it for VM debugging in future.

<...>-1665 [001] d... 217.575173: mm_event_record: min_flt count=203 avg_lat=3 max_lat=58
<...>-1665 [001] d... 217.575183: mm_event_record: maj_flt count=1 avg_lat=1994 max_lat=1994
<...>-1665 [001] d... 217.575184: mm_event_record: kern_alloc count=227 avg_lat=0 max_lat=0
<...>-626 [000] d... 217.578096: mm_event_record: kern_alloc count=4 avg_lat=0 max_lat=0
<...>-6547 [000] .... 217.581913: mm_event_record: min_flt count=7 avg_lat=7 max_lat=20
<...>-6547 [000] .... 217.581955: mm_event_record: kern_alloc count=4 avg_lat=0 max_lat=0

This feature uses event trace for output buffer so that we could use all of
general benefit of event trace(e.g., buffer size management, filtering and
so on). To prevent overflow of the ring buffer by other random event race,
highly suggest that create separate instance of tracing
on /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/instances/

I had a concern of adding overhead. Actually, major|compaction/reclaim
are already heavy cost so it should be not a concern. Rather than,
minor fault and kern alloc would be severe so I tested a micro benchmark
to measure minor page fault overhead.

Test scenario is create 40 threads and each of them does minor
page fault for 25M range(ranges are not overwrapped).
I didn't see any noticible regression.

235453b766 mm: per-process reclaim
These day, there are many platforms available in the embedded market
and they are smarter than kernel which has very limited information
about working set so they want to involve memory management more heavily
like android's lowmemory killer and ashmem or recent many lowmemory
notifier.

One of the simple imagine scenario about userspace's intelligence is that
platform can manage tasks as forground and background so it would be
better to reclaim background's task pages for end-user's *responsibility*
although it has frequent referenced pages.

This patch adds new knob "reclaim under proc/<pid>/" so task manager
can reclaim any target process anytime, anywhere. It could give another
method to platform for using memory efficiently.

It can avoid process killing for getting free memory, which was really
terrible experience because I lost my best score of game I had ever
after I switch the phone call while I enjoyed the game.

Reclaim file-backed pages only.
	echo file > /proc/PID/reclaim
Reclaim anonymous pages only.
	echo anon > /proc/PID/reclaim
Reclaim all pages
	echo all > /proc/PID/reclaim

00af848487 mm: Kconfig: Add support for config size of purging vmap_area
This size is the maximum amount of virtual address space we gather
up before attempting to purge with a TLB flush. It is 128M in most cases.
With repeated and high size vmalloc operations, it may easily generate
more fragments. This is wasting limited vmalloc area, for 32bits.
So make it configable and the default multiplier as 8, 32bits only.

635a7edf36 mm: Support address range reclaim
This patch adds address range reclaim of a process.
The requirement is following as,

Like webkit1, it uses a address space for handling multi tabs.
IOW, it uses *one* process model so all tabs shares address space
of the process. In such scenario, per-process reclaim is rather
coarse-grained so this patch supports more fine-grained reclaim
for being able to reclaim target address range of the process.
For reclaim target range, you should use following format.

	echo [addr] [size-byte] > /proc/pid/reclaim
The addr should be page-aligned.

So now reclaim konb's interface is following as.

echo file > /proc/pid/reclaim
	reclaim file-backed pages only
echo anon > /proc/pid/reclaim
	reclaim anonymous pages only
echo all > /proc/pid/reclaim
	reclaim all pages
echo 0x100000 8K > /proc/pid/reclaim
	reclaim pages in (0x100000 - 0x102000)

fd3a0c0194 mm: Per process reclaim

When onlining memory blocks, this option helps to add the target

14fef28414 mm, swap: make CONFIG_THP_SWAP depend on CONFIG_SWAP
CONFIG_THP_SWAP should depend on CONFIG_SWAP, because it's unreasonable
to optimize swapping for THP (Transparent Huge Page) without basic
swapping support.

In original code, when CONFIG_SWAP=n and CONFIG_THP_SWAP=y,
split_swap_cluster() will not be built because it is in swapfile.c, but
it will be called in huge_memory.c. This doesn't trigger a build error
in practice because the call site is enclosed by PageSwapCache(), which
is defined to be constant 0 when CONFIG_SWAP=n. But this is fragile and
should be fixed.

The comments are fixed too to reflect the latest progress.

d39f8fb4b7 mm: make DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT explicitly depend on SPARSEMEM
The deferred memory initialization relies on section definitions, e.g
PAGES_PER_SECTION, that are only available when CONFIG_SPARSEMEM=y on
most architectures.

Initially DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT depended on explicit
ARCH_SUPPORTS_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT configuration option, but since
the commit 2e3ca40f03 ("mm: relax deferred struct page
requirements") this requirement was relaxed and now it is possible to
enable DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT on architectures that support
DISCONTINGMEM and NO_BOOTMEM which causes build failures.

For instance, setting SMP=y and DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT=y on arc
causes the following build failure:

    CC mm/page_alloc.o

Let's make the DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT explicitly depend on SPARSEMEM
as the systems that support DISCONTIGMEM do not seem to have that huge
amounts of memory that would make DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT relevant.

7d3bf613e9 Merge tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm
Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams:
"This adds a user for the new 'bytes-remaining' updates to
memcpy_mcsafe() that you already received through Ingo via the
  x86-dax- for-linus pull.

Not included here, but still targeting this cycle, is support for
handling memory media errors (poison) consumed via userspace dax
  mappings.

  Summary:

   - DAX broke a fundamental assumption of truncate of file mapped
pages. The truncate path assumed that it is safe to disconnect a
pinned page from a file and let the filesystem reclaim the physical
block. With DAX the page is equivalent to the filesystem block.
Introduce dax_layout_busy_page() to enable filesystems to wait for
pinned DAX pages to be released. Without this wait a filesystem
could allocate blocks under active device-DMA to a new file.

   - DAX arranges for the block layer to be bypassed and uses
     dax_direct_access() + copy_to_iter() to satisfy read(2) calls.
However, the memcpy_mcsafe() facility is available through the pmem
block driver. In order to safely handle media errors, via the DAX
     block-layer bypass, introduce copy_to_iter_mcsafe().

   - Fix cache management policy relative to the ACPI NFIT Platform
Capabilities Structure to properly elide cache flushes when they
are not necessary. The table indicates whether CPU caches are
power-fail protected. Clarify that a deep flush is always performed

3010a5ea66 mm: introduce ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL
Currently the PTE special supports is turned on in per architecture
header files. Most of the time, it is defined in
arch/*/include/asm/pgtable.h depending or not on some other per
architecture static definition.

This patch introduce a new configuration variable to manage this
directly in the Kconfig files. It would later replace
__HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL.

Here notes for some architecture where the definition of
__HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is not obvious:

arm
__HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL which is currently defined in
arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable-3level.h which is included by
arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable.h when CONFIG_ARM_LPAE is set.
So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if ARM_LPAE.

powerpc
__HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined in 2 files:
 - arch/powerpc/include/asm/book3s/64/pgtable.h
 - arch/powerpc/include/asm/pte-common.h
The first one is included if (PPC_BOOK3S & PPC64) while the second is
included in all the other cases.
So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL all the time.

sparc:
__HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined if defined(__sparc__) &&
defined(__arch64__) which are defined through the compiler in
sparc/Makefile if !SPARC32 which I assume to be if SPARC64.
So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if SPARC64

There is no functional change introduced by this patch.

e763848843 mm: introduce MEMORY_DEVICE_FS_DAX and CONFIG_DEV_PAGEMAP_OPS
In preparation for fixing dax-dma-vs-unmap issues, filesystems need to
be able to rely on the fact that they will get wakeups on dev_pagemap
page-idle events. Introduce MEMORY_DEVICE_FS_DAX and
generic_dax_page_free() as common indicator / infrastructure for dax
filesytems to require. With this change there are no users of the
MEMORY_DEVICE_HOST designation, so remove it.

The HMM sub-system extended dev_pagemap to arrange a callback when a
dev_pagemap managed page is freed. Since a dev_pagemap page is free /
idle when its reference count is 1 it requires an additional branch to
check the page-type at put_page() time. Given put_page() is a hot-path
we do not want to incur that check if HMM is not in use, so a static
branch is used to avoid that overhead when not necessary.

Now, the FS_DAX implementation wants to reuse this mechanism for
receiving dev_pagemap ->page_free() callbacks. Rework the HMM-specific
static-key into a generic mechanism that either HMM or FS_DAX code paths
can enable.

For ARCH=um builds, and any other arch that lacks ZONE_DEVICE support,
care must be taken to compile out the DEV_PAGEMAP_OPS infrastructure.
However, we still need to support FS_DAX in the FS_DAX_LIMITED case
implemented by the s390/dcssblk driver.

ab1e8d8960 mm: don't allow deferred pages with NEED_PER_CPU_KM
It is unsafe to do virtual to physical translations before mm_init() is
called if struct page is needed in order to determine the memory section
number (see SECTION_IN_PAGE_FLAGS). This is because only in mm_init()
we initialize struct pages for all the allocated memory when deferred
struct pages are used.

My recent fix in commit c9e97a1997 ("mm: initialize pages on demand
during boot") exposed this problem, because it greatly reduced number of
pages that are initialized before mm_init(), but the problem existed
even before my fix, as Fengguang Wu found.

Below is a more detailed explanation of the problem.

We initialize struct pages in four places:

1. Early in boot a small set of struct pages is initialized to fill the
   first section, and lower zones.

2. During mm_init() we initialize "struct pages" for all the memory that
is allocated, i.e reserved in memblock.

3. Using on-demand logic when pages are allocated after mm_init call
   (when memblock is finished)

4. After smp_init() when the rest free deferred pages are initialized.

The problem occurs if we try to do va to phys translation of a memory
between steps 1 and 2. Because we have not yet initialized struct pages
for all the reserved pages, it is inherently unsafe to do va to phys if
the translation itself requires access of "struct page" as in case of
this combination: CONFIG_SPARSE && !CONFIG_SPARSE_VMEMMAP

The following path exposes the problem:

  start_kernel()
   trap_init()
    setup_cpu_entry_areas()
     setup_cpu_entry_area(cpu)
      get_cpu_gdt_paddr(cpu)
       per_cpu_ptr_to_phys(addr)
        pcpu_addr_to_page(addr)
         virt_to_page(addr)
          pfn_to_page(__pa(addr) >> PAGE_SHIFT)

We disable this path by not allowing NEED_PER_CPU_KM with deferred
struct pages feature.

2e3ca40f03 mm: relax deferred struct page requirements
There is no need to have ARCH_SUPPORTS_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT, as all
the page initialization code is in common code.

Also, there is no need to depend on MEMORY_HOTPLUG, as initialization
code does not really use hotplug memory functionality. So, we can
remove this requirement as well.

This patch allows to use deferred struct page initialization on all
platforms with memblock allocator.

Tested on x86, arm64, and sparc. Also, verified that code compiles on
PPC with CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG disabled.

64c349f4ae mm: add infrastructure for get_user_pages_fast() benchmarking
Performance of get_user_pages_fast() is critical for some workloads, but
it's tricky to test it directly.

This patch provides /sys/kernel/debug/gup_benchmark that helps with
testing performance of it.

See tools/testing/selftests/vm/gup_benchmark.c for userspace
counterpart.

6b368cd4a4 mm/hmm: avoid bloating arch that do not make use of HMM
This moves all new code including new page migration helper behind kernel
