block: Move SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT definitions into <linux/blkdev.h>
commit 233bde21aa43516baa013ef7ac33f3427056db3e upstream. It happens often while I'm preparing a patch for a block driver that I'm wondering: is a definition of SECTOR_SIZE and/or SECTOR_SHIFT available for this driver? Do I have to introduce definitions of these constants before I can use these constants? To avoid this confusion, move the existing definitions of SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT into the <linux/blkdev.h> header file such that these become available for all block drivers. Make the SECTOR_SIZE definition in the uapi msdos_fs.h header file conditional to avoid that including that header file after <linux/blkdev.h> causes the compiler to complain about a SECTOR_SIZE redefinition. Note: the SECTOR_SIZE / SECTOR_SHIFT / SECTOR_BITS definitions have not been removed from uapi header files nor from NAND drivers in which these constants are used for another purpose than converting block layer offsets and sizes into a number of sectors. blktrace: Protect q->blk_trace with RCU
commit c780e86dd48ef6467a1146cf7d0fe1e05a635039 upstream. KASAN is reporting that __blk_add_trace() has a use-after-free issue when accessing q->blk_trace. Indeed the switching of block tracing (and thus eventual freeing of q->blk_trace) is completely unsynchronized with the currently running tracing and thus it can happen that the blk_trace structure is being freed just while __blk_add_trace() works on it. Protect accesses to q->blk_trace by RCU during tracing and make sure we wait for the end of RCU grace period when shutting down tracing. Luckily that is rare enough event that we can afford that. Note that postponing the freeing of blk_trace to an RCU callback should better be avoided as it could have unexpected user visible side-effects as debugfs files would be still existing for a short while block tracing has been shut down. blktrace: Fix potential deadlock between delete & sysfs ops
commit 5acb3cc2c2e9d3020a4fee43763c6463767f1572 upstream.
The lockdep code had reported the following unsafe locking scenario:
CPU0 CPU1
---- ----
lock(s_active#228);
lock(&bdev->bd_mutex/1);
lock(s_active#228);
lock(&bdev->bd_mutex);
*** DEADLOCK ***
The deadlock may happen when one task (CPU1) is trying to delete a
partition in a block device and another task (CPU0) is accessing
tracing sysfs file (e.g. /sys/block/dm-1/trace/act_mask) in that
partition.
The s_active isn't an actual lock. It is a reference count (kn->count)
on the sysfs (kernfs) file. Removal of a sysfs file, however, require
a wait until all the references are gone. The reference count is
treated like a rwsem using lockdep instrumentation code.
The fact that a thread is in the sysfs callback method or in the
ioctl call means there is a reference to the opended sysfs or device
file. That should prevent the underlying block structure from being
removed.
Instead of using bd_mutex in the block_device structure, a new
blk_trace_mutex is now added to the request_queue structure to protect
access to the blk_trace structure.

block: fix an integer overflow in logical block size
commit ad6bf88a6c19a39fb3b0045d78ea880325dfcf15 upstream. Logical block size has type unsigned short. That means that it can be at most 32768. However, there are architectures that can run with 64k pages (for example arm64) and on these architectures, it may be possible to create block devices with 64k block size. For exmaple (run this on an architecture with 64k pages): Mount will fail with this error because it tries to read the superblock using 2-sector access: device-mapper: writecache: I/O is not aligned, sector 2, size 1024, block size 65536 EXT4-fs (dm-0): unable to read superblock This patch changes the logical block size from unsigned short to unsigned int to avoid the overflow. block: introduce blk_rq_is_passthrough
commit 57292b58ddb58689e8c3b4c6eadbef10d9ca44dd upstream. This can be used to check for fs vs non-fs requests and basically removes all knowledge of BLOCK_PC specific from the block layer, as well as preparing for removing the cmd_type field in struct request. block: Fix transfer when chunk sectors exceeds max
commit 15bfd21fbc5d35834b9ea383dc458a1f0c9e3434 upstream. A device may have boundary restrictions where the number of sectors between boundaries exceeds its max transfer size. In this case, we need to cap the max size to the smaller of the two limits. blkdev: Refactoring block io latency histogram codes
The current io_latency_state structure includes entries for read and write requests. There are special types of write commands such as sync and discard (trim) commands, and the current implementation is not general enough if we want to separate latency histogram for such special commands. This change makes io_latency_state structure request-type neutral. It also changes to print the latency average. block: expose inline encryption support through a request queue flag
Define a request queue flag QUEUE_FLAG_INLINECRYPT to indicate that the underlying block device supports inline encryption, and enable it in the ufs-qcom driver (via an intermediate flag on the Scsi_Host) when the ICE support is compiled in and the ICE hardware has been detected. Filesystems will be able to use this flag to decide whether they should allow the use of inline encryption. (Of course, this comes with the important caveat that there isn't yet a proper API to actually *use* inline encryption, besides PFK and dm-req-crypt, but that's arguably a separate issue. Also, note that we can't simply make PFK depend on SCSI_UFS_QCOM_ICE because the dependencies already go in the opposite direction: SCSI_UFS_QCOM_ICE depends on CRYPTO_DEV_QCOM_ICE which depends on PFK, plus it really would be SCSI_UFS_QCOM_ICE *or* MMC_SDHCI_MSM_ICE that is needed, depending on the hardware.) block: fix blk_rq_get_max_sectors for driver private requests
[ Upstream commit f21018427cb007a0894c36ad702990ab639cbbb4 ] Driver private request types should not get the artifical cap for the FS requests. This is important to use the full device capabilities for internal command or NVMe pass through commands. mm: swap: don't delay swap free for fast swap devices
There are couple of issues with swapcache usage when ZRAM is used as swap device. 1) Kernel does a swap readahead which can be around 6 to 8 pages depending on total ram, which is not required for zram since accesses are fast. 2) Kernel delays the freeing up of swapcache expecting a later hit, which again is useless in the case of zram. 3) This is not related to swapcache, but zram usage itself. As mentioned in (2) kernel delays freeing of swapcache, but along with that it delays zram compressed page free also. i.e. there can be 2 copies, though one is compressed. This patch addresses these issues using two new flags QUEUE_FLAG_FAST and SWP_FAST, to indicate that accesses to the device will be fast and cheap, and instructs the swap layer to free up swap space agressively, and not to do read ahead. block: blk-flush: Add support for Barrier flag
A barrier request is used to control ordering of write requests without
clearing the device's cache. LLD support for barrier is optional. If LLD
doesn't support barrier, flush will be issued instead to insure logical
correctness.
To maintain this fallback flush s/w path and flags are appended.
This patch implements the necessary requests marking in order to support
the barrier feature in the block layer.
This patch implements two major changes required for the barrier support.
(1) A new flush execution-policy is added to support "ordered" requests
and a fallback , in case barrier is not supported by LLD.
(2) If there is a flush pending in the flush-queue, the received barrier
is ignored, in order not to miss a demand for an actual flush.

block: Always check queue limits for cloned requests
When a cloned request is retried on other queues it always needs
to be checked against the queue limits of that queue.
Otherwise the calculations for nr_phys_segments might be wrong,
leading to a crash in scsi_init_sgtable().
To clarify this the patch renames blk_rq_check_limits()
to blk_cloned_rq_check_limits() and removes the symbol
export, as the new function should only be used for
cloned requests and never exported.

block: add block polling support
Add basic support for polling for specific IO to complete. This uses the cookie that blk-mq passes back, which enables the block layer to pass this cookie to the driver to spin for a specific request. This will be combined with request latency tracking, so we can make qualified decisions about when to poll and when not to. For now, for benchmark purposes, we add a sysfs file that controls whether polling is enabled or not. block: generic request_queue reference counting
Allow pmem, and other synchronous/bio-based block drivers, to fallback on a per-cpu reference count managed by the core for tracking queue live/dead state. The existing per-cpu reference count for the blk_mq case is promoted to be used in all block i/o scenarios. This involves initializing it by default, waiting for it to drop to zero at exit, and holding a live reference over the invocation of q->make_request_fn() in generic_make_request(). The blk_mq code continues to take its own reference per blk_mq request and retains the ability to freeze the queue, but the check that the queue is frozen is moved to generic_make_request(). This fixes crash signatures like the following: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffff880140000000 [..] Call Trace: [<ffffffff8145e8bf>] ? copy_user_handle_tail+0x5f/0x70 [<ffffffffa004e1e0>] pmem_do_bvec.isra.11+0x70/0xf0 [nd_pmem] [<ffffffffa004e331>] pmem_make_request+0xd1/0x200 [nd_pmem] [<ffffffff811c3162>] ? mempool_alloc+0x72/0x1a0 [<ffffffff8141f8b6>] generic_make_request+0xd6/0x110 [<ffffffff8141f966>] submit_bio+0x76/0x170 [<ffffffff81286dff>] submit_bh_wbc+0x12f/0x160 [<ffffffff81286e62>] submit_bh+0x12/0x20 [<ffffffff813395bd>] jbd2_write_superblock+0x8d/0x170 [<ffffffff8133974d>] jbd2_mark_journal_empty+0x5d/0x90 [<ffffffff813399cb>] jbd2_journal_destroy+0x24b/0x270 [<ffffffff810bc4ca>] ? put_pwq_unlocked+0x2a/0x30 [<ffffffff810bc6f5>] ? destroy_workqueue+0x225/0x250 [<ffffffff81303494>] ext4_put_super+0x64/0x360 [<ffffffff8124ab1a>] generic_shutdown_super+0x6a/0xf0 Cc: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> Cc: Keith Busch <keith.busch@intel.com> Cc: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Suggested-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Reviewed-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Tested-by: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Dan Williams <dan.j.williams@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@fb.com> |

block: Inline blk_integrity in struct gendisk
Up until now the_integrity profile has been dynamically allocated and attached to struct gendisk after the disk has been made active. This causes problems because NVMe devices need to register the profile prior to the partition table being read due to a mandatory metadata buffer requirement. In addition, DM goes through hoops to deal with preallocating, but not initializing integrity profiles. Since the integrity profile is small (4 bytes + a pointer), Christoph suggested moving it to struct gendisk proper. This requires several changes: - Moving the blk_integrity definition to genhd.h. - Inlining blk_integrity in struct gendisk. - Removing the dynamic allocation code. - Adding helper functions which allow gendisk to set up and tear down the integrity sysfs dir when a disk is added/deleted. - Adding a blk_integrity_revalidate() callback for updating the stable pages bdi setting. - The calls that depend on whether a device has an integrity profile or not now key off of the bi->profile pointer. - Simplifying the integrity support routines in DM (Mike Snitzer).
