cb0fc2a32a proc: Avoid mixing integer types in mem_rw()

Use size_t when capping the count argument received by mem_rw(). Since
count is size_t, using min_t(int, ...) can lead to a negative value
that will later be passed to access_remote_vm(), which can cause
unexpected behavior.

Since we are capping the value to at maximum PAGE_SIZE, the conversion
from size_t to int when passing it to access_remote_vm() as "len"
shouldn't be a problem.

0646b0f9f3 proc: only require mm_struct for writing
commit 94f0b2d4a1d0c52035aef425da5e022bd2cb1c71 upstream.

Commit 591a22c14d3f ("proc: Track /proc/$pid/attr/ opener mm_struct") we
started using __mem_open() to track the mm_struct at open-time, so that
we could then check it for writes.

But that also ended up making the permission checks at open time much
stricter - and not just for writes, but for reads too.  And that in turn
caused a regression for at least Fedora 29, where NIC interfaces fail to
start when using NetworkManager.

Since only the write side wanted the mm_struct test, ignore any failures
by __mem_open() at open time, leaving reads unaffected.  The write()
time verification of the mm_struct pointer will then catch the failure
case because a NULL pointer will not match a valid 'current->mm'.

bd354c01cb proc: Track /proc/$pid/attr/ opener mm_struct

Commit bfb819ea20ce ("proc: Check /proc/$pid/attr/ writes against file opener")
tried to make sure that there could not be a confusion between the opener of
a /proc/$pid/attr/ file and the writer. It used struct cred to make sure
the privileges didn't change. However, there were existing cases where a more
privileged thread was passing the opened fd to a differently privileged thread
(during container setup). Instead, use mm_struct to track whether the opener
and writer are still the same process. (This is what several other proc files
already do, though for different reasons.)

2f5500e3c8 proc: Check /proc/$pid/attr/ writes against file opener

Fix another "confused deputy" weakness[1]. Writes to /proc/$pid/attr/
files need to check the opener credentials, since these fds do not
transition state across execve(). Without this, it is possible to
trick another process (which may have different credentials) to write
to its own /proc/$pid/attr/ files, leading to unexpected and possibly
exploitable behaviors.

9170cf8bc7 proc: Use new_inode not new_inode_pseudo

Recently syzbot reported that unmounting proc when there is an ongoing
inotify watch on the root directory of proc could result in a use
after free when the watch is removed after the unmount of proc
when the watcher exits.

Commit 69879c01a0c3 ("proc: Remove the now unnecessary internal mount
of proc") made it easier to unmount proc and allowed syzbot to see the
problem, but looking at the code it has been around for a long time.

Looking at the code the fsnotify watch should have been removed by
fsnotify_sb_delete in generic_shutdown_super.  Unfortunately the inode
was allocated with new_inode_pseudo instead of new_inode so the inode
was not on the sb->s_inodes list.  Which prevented
fsnotify_unmount_inodes from finding the inode and removing the watch
as well as made it so the "VFS: Busy inodes after unmount" warning
could not find the inodes to warn about them.

Make all of the inodes in proc visible to generic_shutdown_super,
and fsnotify_sb_delete by using new_inode instead of new_inode_pseudo.
The only functional difference is that new_inode places the inodes
on the sb->s_inodes list.

I wrote a small test program and I can verify that without changes it
can trigger this issue, and by replacing new_inode_pseudo with
new_inode the issues goes away.

8e03351be7 mm/page_alloc.c: calculate 'available' memory in a separate function

Add a new field, VIRTIO_BALLOON_S_AVAIL, to virtio_balloon memory
statistics protocol, corresponding to 'Available' in /proc/meminfo.

It indicates to the hypervisor how big the balloon can be inflated
without pushing the guest system to swap.  This metric would be very
useful in VM orchestration software to improve memory management of
different VMs under overcommit.

This patch (of 2):

Factor out calculation of the available memory counter into a separate
exportable function, in order to be able to use it in other parts of the
kernel.

In particular, it appears a relevant metric to report to the hypervisor
via virtio-balloon statistics interface (in a followup patch).

c68325bf99 fs/proc/array.c: allow reporting eip/esp for all coredumping threads

0a1eb2d474ed ("fs/proc: Stop reporting eip and esp in /proc/PID/stat")
stopped reporting eip/esp and fd7d56270b52 ("fs/proc: Report eip/esp in
/prod/PID/stat for coredumping") reintroduced the feature to fix a
regression with userspace core dump handlers (such as minicoredumper).

Because PF_DUMPCORE is only set for the primary thread, this didn't fix
the original problem for secondary threads.  Allow reporting the eip/esp
for all threads by checking for PF_EXITING as well.  This is set for all
the other threads when they are killed.  coredump_wait() waits for all the
tasks to become inactive before proceeding to invoke a core dumper.

7451339a5c fs/proc: Report eip/esp in /prod/PID/stat for coredumping
commit fd7d56270b526ca3ed0c224362e3c64a0f86687a upstream.

Commit 0a1eb2d474ed ("fs/proc: Stop reporting eip and esp in
/proc/PID/stat") stopped reporting eip/esp because it is
racy and dangerous for executing tasks. The comment adds:

    As far as I know, there are no use programs that make any
    material use of these fields, so just get rid of them.

However, existing userspace core-dump-handler applications (for
example, minicoredumper) are using these fields since they
provide an excellent cross-platform interface to these valuable
pointers. So that commit introduced a user space visible
regression.

Partially revert the change and make the readout possible for
tasks with the proper permissions and only if the target task
has the PF_DUMPCORE flag set.

86115cce72 fs/proc: Stop reporting eip and esp in /proc/PID/stat

Reporting these fields on a non-current task is dangerous.  If the
task is in any state other than normal kernel code, they may contain
garbage or even kernel addresses on some architectures.  (x86_64
used to do this.  I bet lots of architectures still do.)  With
CONFIG_THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK=y, it can OOPS, too.

As far as I know, there are no use programs that make any material
use of these fields, so just get rid of them.

8f6345a11c coredump: fix race condition between mmget_not_zero()/get_task_mm() and core dumping
commit 04f5866e41fb70690e28397487d8bd8eea7d712a upstream.

The core dumping code has always run without holding the mmap_sem for
writing, despite that is the only way to ensure that the entire vma
layout will not change from under it.  Only using some signal
serialization on the processes belonging to the mm is not nearly enough.
This was pointed out earlier.  For example in Hugh's post from Jul 2017:

In particular because the growsdown and growsup can move the
vm_start/vm_end the various loops the core dump does around the vma will
not be consistent if page faults can happen concurrently.

Pretty much all users calling mmget_not_zero()/get_task_mm() and then
taking the mmap_sem had the potential to introduce unexpected side
effects in the core dumping code.

Adding mmap_sem for writing around the ->core_dump invocation is a
viable long term fix, but it requires removing all copy user and page
faults and to replace them with get_dump_page() for all binary formats
which is not suitable as a short term fix.

For the time being this solution manually covers the places that can
confuse the core dump either by altering the vma layout or the vma flags
while it runs.  Once ->core_dump runs under mmap_sem for writing the
function mmget_still_valid() can be dropped.

Allowing mmap_sem protected sections to run in parallel with the
coredump provides some minor parallelism advantage to the swapoff code
(which seems to be safe enough by never mangling any vma field and can
keep doing swapins in parallel to the core dumping) and to some other
corner case.

In order to facilitate the backporting I added "Fixes: 86039bd3b4e6"
however the side effect of this same race condition in /proc/pid/mem
should be reproducible since before 2.6.12-rc2 so I couldn't add any
other "Fixes:" because there's no hash beyond the git genesis commit.

Because find_extend_vma() is the only location outside of the process
context that could modify the "mm" structures under mmap_sem for
reading, by adding the mmget_still_valid() check to it, all other cases
that take the mmap_sem for reading don't need the new check after
mmget_not_zero()/get_task_mm().  The expand_stack() in page fault
context also doesn't need the new check, because all tasks under core
dumping are frozen.

commit 23da9588037e ("fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c: fix NULL pointer
dereference in put_links") forgot to handle start_unregistering() case,
while header->parent is NULL, it calls erase_header() and as seen in the
above syzkaller call trace, accessing &header->parent->root will trigger
a NULL pointer dereference.

As that commit explained, there is also no need to call
start_unregistering() if header->parent is NULL.

A new dir entry can be created in get_subdir and its 'header->parent' is
set to NULL.  Only after insert_header success, it will be set to 'dir',
otherwise 'header->parent' is set to NULL and drop_sysctl_table is called.
However in err handling path of get_subdir, drop_sysctl_table also be
called on 'new->header' regardless its value of parent pointer.  Then
put_links is called, which triggers NULL-ptr deref when access member of
header->parent.

In fact we have multiple error paths which call drop_sysctl_table() there,
upon failure on insert_links() we also call drop_sysctl_table().And even
in the successful case on __register_sysctl_table() we still always call
drop_sysctl_table().This patch fix it.

adc143b97d proc: do not access cmdline nor environ from file-backed areas
commit 7f7ccc2ccc2e70c6054685f5e3522efa81556830 upstream.

proc_pid_cmdline_read() and environ_read() directly access the target
process' VM to retrieve the command line and environment. If this
process remaps these areas onto a file via mmap(), the requesting
process may experience various issues such as extra delays if the
underlying device is slow to respond.

Let's simply refuse to access file-backed areas in these functions.
For this we add a new FOLL_ANON gup flag that is passed to all calls
to access_remote_vm(). The code already takes care of such failures
(including unmapped areas). Accesses via /proc/pid/mem were not
changed though.

This was assigned CVE-2018-1120.

Note for stable backports: the patch may apply to kernels prior to 4.11
but silently miss one location; it must be checked that no call to
access_remote_vm() keeps zero as the last argument.

56941bb640 proc: don't use FOLL_FORCE for reading cmdline and environment

Now that Lorenzo cleaned things up and made the FOLL_FORCE users
explicit, it becomes obvious how some of them don't really need
FOLL_FORCE at all.

So remove FOLL_FORCE from the proc code that reads the command line and
arguments from user space.

The mem_rw() function actually does want FOLL_FORCE, because gdd (and
possibly many other debuggers) use it as a much more convenient version
of PTRACE_PEEKDATA, but we should consider making the FOLL_FORCE part
conditional on actually being a ptracer.  This does not actually do
that, just moves adds a comment to that effect and moves the gup_flags
settings next to each other.

behaviour (and hence bugs) within the mm subsystem.

5747570734 proc: restrict kernel stack dumps to root

Currently, you can use /proc/self/task/*/stack to cause a stack walk on
a task you control while it is running on another CPU.  That means that
the stack can change under the stack walker.  The stack walker does
have guards against going completely off the rails and into random
kernel memory, but it can interpret random data from your kernel stack
as instruction pointers and stack pointers.  This can cause exposure of
kernel stack contents to userspace.

Restrict the ability to inspect kernel stacks of arbitrary tasks to root
in order to prevent a local attacker from exploiting racy stack unwinding
to leak kernel task stack contents.  See the added comment for a longer
rationale.

There don't seem to be any users of this userspace API that can't
gracefully bail out if reading from the file fails.  Therefore, I believe
that this change is unlikely to break things.  In the case that this patch
does end up needing a revert, the next-best solution might be to fake a
single-entry stack based on wchan.

For certain use cases it is desired to enforce mitigations so they cannot
be undone afterwards. That's important for loader stubs which want to
prevent a child from disabling the mitigation again. Will also be used for
seccomp(). The extra state preserving of the prctl state for SSB is a
preparatory step for EBPF dymanic speculation control.

However sscanf() is broken garbage.

It silently accepts whitespace between format specifiers
(did you know that?).

It silently accepts valid strings which result in integer overflow.

Do not use sscanf() for any even remotely reliable parsing code.

b8c71ce9e0 procfs: fix pthread cross-thread naming if !PR_DUMPABLE

The PR_DUMPABLE flag causes the pid related paths of the proc file
system to be owned by ROOT.

The implementation of pthread_set/getname_np however needs access to
/proc/<pid>/task/<tid>/comm.  If PR_DUMPABLE is false this
implementation is locked out.

This patch installs a special permission function for the file "comm"
that grants read and write access to all threads of the same group
regardless of the ownership of the inode.  For all other threads the
function falls back to the generic inode permission check.

106253c4c9 proc: meminfo: estimate available memory more conservatively

The MemAvailable item in /proc/meminfo is to give users a hint of how
much memory is allocatable without causing swapping, so it excludes the
zones' low watermarks as unavailable to userspace.

However, for a userspace allocation, kswapd will actually reclaim until
the free pages hit a combination of the high watermark and the page
allocator's lowmem protection that keeps a certain amount of DMA and
DMA32 memory from userspace as well.

Subtract the full amount we know to be unavailable to userspace from the
number of free pages when calculating MemAvailable.

96450e0ffd fs/proc: Stop trying to report thread stacks

This reverts more of:

  b76437579d ("procfs: mark thread stack correctly in proc/<pid>/maps")

... which was partially reverted by:

  65376df58217 ("proc: revert /proc/<pid>/maps [stack:TID] annotation")

Originally, /proc/PID/task/TID/maps was the same as /proc/TID/maps.

In current kernels, /proc/PID/maps (or /proc/TID/maps even for
threads) shows "[stack]" for VMAs in the mm's stack address range.

In contrast, /proc/PID/task/TID/maps uses KSTK_ESP to guess the
target thread's stack's VMA.  This is racy, probably returns garbage
and, on arches with CONFIG_TASK_INFO_IN_THREAD=y, is also crash-prone:
KSTK_ESP is not safe to use on tasks that aren't known to be running
ordinary process-context kernel code.

This patch removes the difference and just shows "[stack]" for VMAs
in the mm's stack range.  This is IMO much more sensible -- the
actual "stack" address really is treated specially by the VM code,
and the current thread stack isn't even well-defined for programs
that frequently switch stacks on their own.

4b35943067 mm: larger stack guard gap, between vmas

Stack guard page is a useful feature to reduce a risk of stack smashing
into a different mapping. We have been using a single page gap which
is sufficient to prevent having stack adjacent to a different mapping.
But this seems to be insufficient in the light of the stack usage in
userspace. E.g. glibc uses as large as 64kB alloca() in many commonly
used functions. Others use constructs liks gid_t buffer[NGROUPS_MAX]
which is 256kB or stack strings with MAX_ARG_STRLEN.

This will become especially dangerous for suid binaries and the default
no limit for the stack size limit because those applications can be
tricked to consume a large portion of the stack and a single glibc call
could jump over the guard page. These attacks are not theoretical,
unfortunatelly.

Make those attacks less probable by increasing the stack guard gap
to 1MB (on systems with 4k pages; but make it depend on the page size
because systems with larger base pages might cap stack allocations in
the PAGE_SIZE units) which should cover larger alloca() and VLA stack
allocations. It is obviously not a full fix because the problem is
somehow inherent, but it should reduce attack space a lot.

One could argue that the gap size should be configurable from userspace,
but that can be done later when somebody finds that the new 1MB is wrong
for some special case applications.  For now, add a kernel command line
option (stack_guard_gap) to specify the stack gap size (in page units).

Implementation wise, first delete all the old code for stack guard page:
because although we could get away with accounting one extra page in a
stack vma, accounting a larger gap can break userspace - case in point,
a program run with "ulimit -S -v 20000" failed when the 1MB gap was
counted for RLIMIT_AS; similar problems could come with RLIMIT_MLOCK
and strict non-overcommit mode.

Instead of keeping gap inside the stack vma, maintain the stack guard
gap as a gap between vmas: using vm_start_gap() in place of vm_start
(or vm_end_gap() in place of vm_end if VM_GROWSUP) in just those few
places which need to respect the gap - mainly arch_get_unmapped_area(),
and and the vma tree's subtree_gap support for that.

One cgroup maintainer mentioned that "cgroup is trying to offline
a cpuset css, which takes place under cgroup_mutex.  The offlining
ends up trying to drain active usages of a sysctl table which apprently
is not happening."
The real reason is that proc_sys_readdir doesn't drop reference added
by grab_header when return from !dir_emit_dots path. So this cpuset
offline path will wait here forever.

Commit b76437579d ("procfs: mark thread stack correctly in
proc/<pid>/maps") added [stack:TID] annotation to /proc/<pid>/maps.

Finding the task of a stack VMA requires walking the entire thread list,
turning this into quadratic behavior: a thousand threads means a
thousand stacks, so the rendering of /proc/<pid>/maps needs to look at a
million combinations.

The cost is not in proportion to the usefulness as described in the
patch.

Drop the [stack:TID] annotation to make /proc/<pid>/maps (and
/proc/<pid>/numa_maps) usable again for higher thread counts.

The [stack] annotation inside /proc/<pid>/task/<tid>/maps is retained, as
identifying the stack VMA there is an O(1) operation.

9beb96b344 proc: prevent stacking filesystems on top

This prevents stacking filesystems (ecryptfs and overlayfs) from using
procfs as lower filesystem.  There is too much magic going on inside
procfs, and there is no good reason to stack stuff on top of procfs.

(For example, procfs does access checks in VFS open handlers, and
ecryptfs by design calls open handlers from a kernel thread that doesn't
drop privileges or so.)

898149d10b proc: prevent accessing /proc/<PID>/environ until it's ready
commit 8148a73c9901a8794a50f950083c00ccf97d43b3 upstream.

If /proc/<PID>/environ gets read before the envp[] array is fully set up
in create_{aout,elf,elf_fdpic,flat}_tables(), we might end up trying to
read more bytes than are actually written, as env_start will already be
set but env_end will still be zero, making the range calculation
underflow, allowing to read beyond the end of what has been written.

Fix this as it is done for /proc/<PID>/cmdline by testing env_end for
zero.  It is, apparently, intentionally set last in create_*_tables().

This bug was found by the PaX size_overflow plugin that detected the
arithmetic underflow of 'this_len = env_end - (env_start + src)' when
env_end is still zero.

The expected consequence is that userland trying to access
/proc/<PID>/environ of a not yet fully set up process may get
inconsistent data as we're in the middle of copying in the environment
variables.

e513b90a9a numa: fix /proc/<pid>/numa_maps for THP

In gather_pte_stats() a THP pmd is cast into a pte, which is wrong
because the layouts may differ depending on the architecture.  On s390
this will lead to inaccurate numa_maps accounting in /proc because of
misguided pte_present() and pte_dirty() checks on the fake pte.

On other architectures pte_present() and pte_dirty() may work by chance,
but there may be an issue with direct-access (dax) mappings w/o
underlying struct pages when HAVE_PTE_SPECIAL is set and THP is
available.  In vm_normal_page() the fake pte will be checked with
pte_special() and because there is no "special" bit in a pmd, this will
always return false and the VM_PFNMAP | VM_MIXEDMAP checking will be
skipped.  On dax mappings w/o struct pages, an invalid struct page
pointer would then be returned that can crash the kernel.

This patch fixes the numa_maps THP handling by introducing new "_pmd"
variants of the can_gather_numa_stats() and vm_normal_page() functions.

4b20545910 numa: fix /proc/<pid>/numa_maps for hugetlbfs on s390

When working with hugetlbfs ptes (which are actually pmds) is not valid to
directly use pte functions like pte_present() because the hardware bit
layout of pmds and ptes can be different.  This is the case on s390.
Therefore we have to convert the hugetlbfs ptes first into a valid pte
encoding with huge_ptep_get().

Currently the /proc/<pid>/numa_maps code uses hugetlbfs ptes without
huge_ptep_get().  On s390 this leads to the following two problems:

1) The pte_present() function returns false (instead of true) for
   PROT_NONE hugetlb ptes. Therefore PROT_NONE vmas are missing
   completely in the "numa_maps" output.

2) The pte_dirty() function always returns false for all hugetlb ptes.
   Therefore these pages are reported as "mapped=xxx" instead of
   "dirty=xxx".

Therefore use huge_ptep_get() to correctly convert the hugetlb ptes.

969624b7c1 ptrace: use fsuid, fsgid, effective creds for fs access checks

By checking the effective credentials instead of the real UID / permitted
capabilities, ensure that the calling process actually intended to use its
credentials.

To ensure that all ptrace checks use the correct caller credentials (e.g.
in case out-of-tree code or newly added code omits the PTRACE_MODE_*CREDS
flag), use two new flags and require one of them to be set.

The problem was that when a privileged task had temporarily dropped its
privileges, e.g.  by calling setreuid(0, user_uid), with the intent to
perform following syscalls with the credentials of a user, it still passed
ptrace access checks that the user would not be able to pass.

While an attacker should not be able to convince the privileged task to
perform a ptrace() syscall, this is a problem because the ptrace access
check is reused for things in procfs.

In particular, the following somewhat interesting procfs entries only rely
on ptrace access checks:

 /proc/$pid/stat - uses the check for determining whether pointers
     should be visible, useful for bypassing ASLR
 /proc/$pid/maps - also useful for bypassing ASLR
 /proc/$pid/cwd - useful for gaining access to restricted
     directories that contain files with lax permissions, e.g. in
     this scenario:
     lrwxrwxrwx root root /proc/13020/cwd -> /root/foobar
     drwx------ root root /root
     drwxr-xr-x root root /root/foobar
     -rw-r--r-- root root /root/foobar/secret

Therefore, on a system where a root-owned mode 6755 binary changes its
effective credentials as described and then dumps a user-specified file,
this could be used by an attacker to reveal the memory layout of root's
processes or reveal the contents of files he is not allowed to access
(through /proc/$pid/cwd).

Writing to /proc/$pid/coredump_filter always returns -ESRCH because commit
774636e19e ("proc: convert to kstrto*()/kstrto*_from_user()") removed
the setting of ret after the get_proc_task call and incorrectly left it as
-ESRCH.  Instead, return 0 when successful.

54708d2858 proc: actually make proc_fd_permission() thread-friendly
The commit 96d0df79f2 ("proc: make proc_fd_permission() thread-friendly")
fixed the access to /proc/self/fd from sub-threads, but introduced another
problem: a sub-thread can't access /proc/<tid>/fd/ or /proc/thread-self/fd
if generic_permission() fails.

Change proc_fd_permission() to check same_thread_group(pid_task(), current).

326c2597a3 mm: clear pte in clear_soft_dirty()
As mentioned in the commit 56eecdb912 ("mm: Use ptep/pmdp_set_numa()
for updating _PAGE_NUMA bit"), architectures like ppc64 don't do tlb
flush in set_pte/pmd functions.

So when dealing with existing pte in clear_soft_dirty, the pte must be
cleared before being modified.
