BACKPORT: kbuild: add ability to generate BTF type info for vmlinux
This patch adds new config option to trigger generation of BTF type information from DWARF debuginfo for vmlinux and kernel modules through pahole, which in turn relies on libbpf for btf_dedup() algorithm. The intent is to record compact type information of all types used inside kernel, including all the structs/unions/typedefs/etc. This enables BPF's compile-once-run-everywhere ([0]) approach, in which tracing programs that are inspecting kernel's internal data (e.g., struct task_struct) can be compiled on a system running some kernel version, but would be possible to run on other kernel versions (and configurations) without recompilation, even if the layout of structs changed and/or some of the fields were added, removed, or renamed. This is only possible if BPF loader can get kernel type info to adjust all the offsets correctly. This patch is a first time in this direction, making sure that BTF type info is part of Linux kernel image in non-loadable ELF section. BTF deduplication ([1]) algorithm typically provides 100x savings compared to DWARF data, so resulting .BTF section is not big as is typically about 2MB in size. Kconfig.debug: provide a little extra FRAME_WARN leeway when KASAN is enabled
[ Upstream commit 152fe65f300e1819d59b80477d3e0999b4d5d7d2 ] When enabled, KASAN enlarges function's stack-frames. Pushing quite a few over the current threshold. This can mainly be seen on 32-bit architectures where the present limit (when !GCC) is a lowly 1024-Bytes. parisc: Increase FRAME_WARN to 2048 bytes on parisc
[ Upstream commit 8d192bec534bd5b778135769a12e5f04580771f7 ] PA-RISC uses a much bigger frame size for functions than other architectures. So increase it to 2048 for 32- and 64-bit kernels. xtensa: increase size of gcc stack frame check
[ Upstream commit 867050247e295cf20fce046a92a7e6491fcfe066 ] xtensa frame size is larger than the frame size for almost all other architectures. This results in more than 50 "the frame size of <n> is larger than 1024 bytes" errors when trying to build xtensa:allmodconfig. Increase frame size for xtensa to 1536 bytes to avoid compile errors due to frame size limits. error-injection: Add prompt for function error injection
commit a4412fdd49dc011bcc2c0d81ac4cab7457092650 upstream.
The config to be able to inject error codes into any function annotated
with ALLOW_ERROR_INJECTION() is enabled when FUNCTION_ERROR_INJECTION is
enabled. But unfortunately, this is always enabled on x86 when KPROBES
is enabled, and there's no way to turn it off.
As kprobes is useful for observability of the kernel, it is useful to
have it enabled in production environments. But error injection should
be avoided. Add a prompt to the config to allow it to be disabled even
when kprobes is enabled, and get rid of the "def_bool y".
This is a kernel debug feature (it's in Kconfig.debug), and should have
never been something enabled by default.

Merge resolution notes:
- Dropped the changes that added an LTS-specific backport of the
blake2s library, since this branch already has a newer version of
the blake2s library.
- Added CHACHA20_KEY_SIZE and CHACHA20_BLOCK_SIZE constants to
chacha.h, to minimize changes from the 4.19 LTS version of random.c
- Retain a fix to the rng-seed support in drivers/of/fdt.c that this
branch and 4.19.250 have, but 4.19.249 doesn't have.

random: remove ratelimiting for in-kernel unseeded randomness
commit cc1e127bfa95b5fb2f9307e7168bf8b2b45b4c5e upstream. The CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM debug option controls whether the kernel warns about all unseeded randomness or just the first instance. There's some complicated rate limiting and comparison to the previous caller, such that even with CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM enabled, developers still don't see all the messages or even an accurate count of how many were missed. This is the result of basically parallel mechanisms aimed at accomplishing more or less the same thing, added at different points in random.c history, which sort of compete with the first-instance-only limiting we have now. It turns out, however, that nobody cares about the first unseeded randomness instance of in-kernel users. The same first user has been there for ages now, and nobody is doing anything about it. It isn't even clear that anybody _can_ do anything about it. Most places that can do something about it have switched over to using get_random_bytes_wait() or wait_for_random_bytes(), which is the right thing to do, but there is still much code that needs randomness sometimes during init, and as a geeneral rule, if you're not using one of the _wait functions or the readiness notifier callback, you're bound to be doing it wrong just based on that fact alone. So warning about this same first user that can't easily change is simply not an effective mechanism for anything at all. Users can't do anything about it, as the Kconfig text points out -- the problem isn't in userspace code -- and kernel developers don't or more often can't react to it. Instead, show the warning for all instances when CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM is set, so that developers can debug things need be, or if it isn't set, don't show a warning at all. At the same time, CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM now implies setting random.ratelimit_disable=1 on by default, since if you care about one you probably care about the other too. And we can clean up usage around the related urandom_warning ratelimiter as well (whose behavior isn't changing), so that it properly counts missed messages after the 10 message threshold is reached. ARM: 8800/1: use choice for kernel unwinders
commit f9b58e8c7d031b0daa5c9a9ee27f5a4028ba53ac upstream.
While in theory multiple unwinders could be compiled in, it does
not make sense in practise. Use a choice to make the unwinder
selection mutually exclusive and mandatory.
Already before this commit it has not been possible to deselect
FRAME_POINTER. Remove the obsolete comment.
Furthermore, to produce a meaningful backtrace with FRAME_POINTER
enabled the kernel needs a specific function prologue:
mov ip, sp
stmfd sp!, {fp, ip, lr, pc}
sub fp, ip, #4
To get to the required prologue gcc uses apcs and no-sched-prolog.
This compiler options are not available on clang, and clang is not
able to generate the required prologue. Make the FRAME_POINTER
config symbol depending on !clang.

[ALPS05435783] lib: make PAGE_OWNER depends on !MTK_GMO_RAM_OPTIMIZE
We need CONFIG_PAGE_OWNER to userdebug.config to debug OOM issues and we do not want to impact the lowmem devices. So make PAGE_OWNER depends on !MTK_GMO_RAM_OPTIMIZE as a temporary solution. The long-term solution will be adding page_owner=on dynamically. UPSTREAM: lib: Introduce test_stackinit module
Upstream commit 50ceaa95ea09 ("lib: Introduce test_stackinit module").
Adds test for stack initialization coverage. We have several build options
that control the level of stack variable initialization. This test lets us
visualize which options cover which cases, and provide tests for some of
the pathological padding conditions the compiler will sometimes fail to
initialize.
All options pass the explicit initialization cases and the partial
initializers (even with padding):

UPSTREAM: dynamic_debug: allow to work if debugfs is disabled
With the realization that having debugfs enabled on "production" systems is generally not a good idea, debugfs is being disabled from more and more platforms over time. However, the functionality of dynamic debugging still is needed at times, and since it relies on debugfs for its user api, having debugfs disabled also forces dynamic debug to be disabled. To get around this, also create the "control" file for dynamic_debug in procfs. This allows people turn on debugging as needed at runtime for individual driverfs and subsystems. UPSTREAM: kcov: improve CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_KCOV help text
(Upstream commit 40453c4f9bb6d166a56a102a8c51dd24b0801557.) The help text for CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_KCOV is stale, and describes the feature as being enabled only for x86_64, when it is now enabled for several architectures, including arm, arm64, powerpc, and s390. Let's remove that stale help text, and update it along the lines of hat for ARCH_HAS_FORTIFY_SOURCE, better describing when an architecture should select CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_KCOV. kmemleak: increase DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_EARLY_LOG_SIZE default to 16K
[ Upstream commit b751c52bb587ae66f773b15204ef7a147467f4c7 ] The current default value (400) is too low on many systems (e.g. some ARM64 platform takes up 1000+ entries). syzbot uses 16000 as default value, and has proved to be enough on beefy configurations, so let's pick that value. This consumes more RAM on boot (each entry is 160 bytes, so in total ~2.5MB of RAM), but the memory would later be freed (early_log is __initdata). BACKPORT: kasan: remove use after scope bugs detection.
(Upstream commit 7771bdbbfd3d6f204631b6fd9e1bbc30cd15918e). Use after scope bugs detector seems to be almost entirely useless for the linux kernel. It exists over two years, but I've seen only one valid bug so far [1]. And the bug was fixed before it has been reported. There were some other use-after-scope reports, but they were false-positives due to different reasons like incompatibility with structleak plugin. This feature significantly increases stack usage, especially with GCC < 9 version, and causes a 32K stack overflow. It probably adds performance penalty too. Given all that, let's remove use-after-scope detector entirely. While preparing this patch I've noticed that we mistakenly enable use-after-scope detection for clang compiler regardless of CONFIG_KASAN_EXTRA setting. This is also fixed now. id = ida_alloc(ida, GFP_xxx);
ida_free(ida, id);

deprecate the '__deprecated' attribute warnings entirely and for good
We haven't had lots of deprecation warnings lately, but the rdma use of it made them flare up again. They are not useful. They annoy everybody, and nobody ever does anything about them, because it's always "somebody elses problem". And when people start thinking that warnings are normal, they stop looking at them, and the real warnings that mean something go unnoticed. If you want to get rid of a function, just get rid of it. Convert every user to the new world order. And if you can't do that, then don't annoy everybody else with your marking that says "I couldn't be bothered to fix this, so I'll just spam everybody elses build logs with warnings about my laziness". Make a kernelnewbies wiki page about things that could be cleaned up, write a blog post about it, or talk to people on the mailing lists. But don't add warnings to the kernel build about cleanup that you think should happen but you aren't doing yourself. Don't. Just don't. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

printk: Make CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable
The goal of passing the "quiet" option to the kernel is for the kernel to be quiet unless something really is wrong. Sofar passing quiet has been (mostly) equivalent to passing loglevel=4 on the kernel commandline. Which means to show any messages with a level of KERN_ERR or higher severity on the console. In practice this often does not result in a quiet boot though, since there are many false-positive or otherwise harmless error messages printed, defeating the purpose of the quiet option. Esp. the ACPICA code is really bad wrt this, but there are plenty of others too. This commit makes CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable. This for example will allow distros which want quiet to really mean quiet to set CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET so that only messages with a higher severity then KERN_ERR (CRIT, ALERT, EMERG) get printed, avoiding an endless game of whack-a-mole silencing harmless error messages. kcov: test compiler capability in Kconfig and correct dependency
As Documentation/kbuild/kconfig-language.txt notes, 'select' should be be used with care - it forces a lower limit of another symbol, ignoring the dependency. Currently, KCOV can select GCC_PLUGINS even if arch does not select HAVE_GCC_PLUGINS. This could cause the unmet direct dependency. Now that Kconfig can test compiler capability, let's handle this in a more sophisticated way. There are two ways to enable KCOV; use the compiler that natively supports -fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc, or build the SANCOV plugin if the compiler has ability to build GCC plugins. Hence, the correct dependency for KCOV is: depends on CC_HAS_SANCOV_TRACE_PC || GCC_PLUGINS You do not need to build the SANCOV plugin if the compiler already supports -fsanitize-coverage=trace-pc. Hence, the select should be: select GCC_PLUGIN_SANCOV if !CC_HAS_SANCOV_TRACE_PC With this, GCC_PLUGIN_SANCOV is selected only when necessary, so scripts/Makefile.gcc-plugins can be cleaner. I also cleaned up Kconfig and scripts/Makefile.kcov as well. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <yamada.masahiro@socionext.com> Reviewed-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> |

Merge tag 'overflow-v4.18-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux
Pull overflow updates from Kees Cook:
"This adds the new overflow checking helpers and adds them to the
2-factor argument allocators. And this adds the saturating size
helpers and does a treewide replacement for the struct_size() usage.
Additionally this adds the overflow testing modules to make sure
everything works.
I'm still working on the treewide replacements for allocators with
"simple" multiplied arguments:
*alloc(a * b, ...) -> *alloc_array(a, b, ...)
and
*zalloc(a * b, ...) -> *calloc(a, b, ...)
as well as the more complex cases, but that's separable from this
portion of the series. I expect to have the rest sent before -rc1
closes; there are a lot of messy cases to clean up.
Summary:
- Introduce arithmetic overflow test helper functions (Rasmus)
- Use overflow helpers in 2-factor allocators (Kees, Rasmus)
- Introduce overflow test module (Rasmus, Kees)
- Introduce saturating size helper functions (Matthew, Kees)
- Treewide use of struct_size() for allocators (Kees)"

lib: add runtime test of check_*_overflow functions
This adds a small module for testing that the check_*_overflow functions work as expected, whether implemented in C or using gcc builtins. Example output: test_overflow: u8 : 18 tests test_overflow: s8 : 19 tests test_overflow: u16: 17 tests test_overflow: s16: 17 tests test_overflow: u32: 17 tests test_overflow: s32: 17 tests test_overflow: u64: 17 tests test_overflow: s64: 21 tests Signed-off-by: Rasmus Villemoes <linux@rasmusvillemoes.dk> [kees: add output to commit log, drop u64 tests on 32-bit] Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> |
