f10defb0be hfs/hfsplus: avoid WARN_ON() for sanity check, use proper error handling
commit cb7a95af78d29442b8294683eca4897544b8ef46 upstream.

Commit 55d1cbbbb29e ("hfs/hfsplus: use WARN_ON for sanity check") fixed
a build warning by turning a comment into a WARN_ON(), but it turns out
that syzbot then complains because it can trigger said warning with a
corrupted hfs image.

The warning actually does warn about a bad situation, but we are much
better off just handling it as the error it is. So rather than warn
about us doing bad things, stop doing the bad things and return -EIO.

While at it, also fix a memory leak that was introduced by an earlier
fix for a similar syzbot warning situation, and add a check for one case
that historically wasn't handled at all (ie neither comment nor
subsequent WARN_ON).

48d9e2e6de hfs/hfsplus: use WARN_ON for sanity check
commit 55d1cbbbb29e6656c662ee8f73ba1fc4777532eb upstream.

gcc warns about a couple of instances in which a sanity check exists but
the author wasn't sure how to react to it failing, which makes it look
like a possible bug:

  fs/hfsplus/inode.c: In function 'hfsplus_cat_read_inode':

panic() is probably not the correct choice here, but a WARN_ON
seems appropriate and avoids the compile-time warning.

  struct hfs_inode_info
    struct hfs_cat_key
      struct hfs_name
u8 len # len is greater than HFS_NAMELEN(31) which is the
maximum length of an HFS filename

OOB read occurred:
hfs_write_inode()
  hfs_brec_find()
    __hfs_brec_find()
      hfs_cat_keycmp()
hfs_strcmp() # OOB read occurred due to len is too large

Fix this by adding a Check on len in hfs_write_inode() before calling
hfs_brec_find().

If in->len is much larger than HFS_NAMELEN(31) which is the maximum
length of an HFS filename, a OOB write could occur in hfs_asc2mac(). In
that case, when the dst reaches the boundary, the srclen is still
greater than 0, which causes a OOB write.
Fix this by adding a check on dstlen in while() before writing to dst
address.

We have namespaces, so use them for all vfs-exported namespaces so that

Some in-kernel drivers that do direct filesystem accesses (because they
serve up files) are also allowed access to these symbols to keep 'make
allmodconfig' builds working properly, but it is not needed for Android

8c288004aa FROMLIST: Add flags option to get xattr method paired to __vfs_getxattr
Add a flag option to get xattr method that could have a bit flag of
XATTR_NOSECURITY passed to it. XATTR_NOSECURITY is generally then
set in the __vfs_getxattr path when called by security
infrastructure.

This handles the case of a union filesystem driver that is being
requested by the security layer to report back the xattr data.

For the use case where access is to be blocked by the security layer.

The path then could be security(dentry) ->
__vfs_getxattr(dentry...XATTR_NOSECURITY) ->
handler->get(dentry...XATTR_NOSECURITY) ->
__vfs_getxattr(lower_dentry...XATTR_NOSECURITY) ->
lower_handler->get(lower_dentry...XATTR_NOSECURITY)
which would report back through the chain data and success as
expected, the logging security layer at the top would have the
data to determine the access permissions and report back the target
context that was blocked.

Without the get handler flag, the path on a union filesystem would be
the errant security(dentry) -> __vfs_getxattr(dentry) ->
handler->get(dentry) -> vfs_getxattr(lower_dentry) -> nested ->
security(lower_dentry, log off) -> lower_handler->get(lower_dentry)
which would report back through the chain no data, and -EACCES.

For selinux for both cases, this would translate to a correctly
determined blocked access. In the first case with this change a correct avc
log would be reported, in the second legacy case an incorrect avc log
would be reported against an uninitialized u:object_r:unlabeled:s0
context making the logs cosmetically useless for audit2allow.

This patch series is inert and is the wide-spread addition of the
flags option for xattr functions, and a replacement of __vfs_getxattr
with __vfs_getxattr(...XATTR_NOSECURITY).

b3b2177a2d hfs: add lock nesting notation to hfs_find_init
Syzbot reports a possible recursive lock in [1].

This happens due to missing lock nesting information. From the logs, we
see that a call to hfs_fill_super is made to mount the hfs filesystem.
While searching for the root inode, the lock on the catalog btree is
grabbed. Then, when the parent of the root isn't found, a call to
__hfs_bnode_create is made to create the parent of the root. This
eventually leads to a call to hfs_ext_read_extent which grabs a lock on
the extents btree.

Since the order of locking is catalog btree -> extents btree, this lock
hierarchy does not lead to a deadlock.

To tell lockdep that this locking is safe, we add nesting notation to
distinguish between catalog btrees, extents btrees, and attributes
btrees (for HFS+). This has already been done in hfsplus.

54a5ead6f5 hfs: fix high memory mapping in hfs_bnode_read
Pages that we read in hfs_bnode_read need to be kmapped into kernel
address space. However, currently only the 0th page is kmapped. If the

To fix this, we kmap relevant pages one by one and copy their relevant

16ee572eaf hfs: add missing clean-up in hfs_fill_super
Patch series "hfs: fix various errors", v2.

This series ultimately aims to address a lockdep warning in
hfs_find_init reported by Syzbot [1].

The work done for this led to the discovery of another bug, and the
Syzkaller repro test also reveals an invalid memory access error after
clearing the lockdep warning. Hence, this series is broken up into
three patches:

1. Add a missing call to hfs_find_exit for an error path in
   hfs_fill_super

2. Fix memory mapping in hfs_bnode_read by fixing calls to kmap

3. Add lock nesting notation to tell lockdep that the observed locking
   hierarchy is safe

This patch (of 3):

Before exiting hfs_fill_super, the struct hfs_find_data used in
hfs_find_init should be passed to hfs_find_exit to be cleaned up, and to
release the lock held on the btree.

The call to hfs_find_exit is missing from an error path. We add it back
in by consolidating calls to hfs_find_exit for error paths.

549c729771 fs: make helpers idmap mount aware
Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A
filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user
namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for
additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to
translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all
relevant helpers in earlier patches.

As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of
introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly
mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods.

e65ce2a50c acl: handle idmapped mounts
The posix acl permission checking helpers determine whether a caller is
privileged over an inode according to the acls associated with the
inode. Add helpers that make it possible to handle acls on idmapped
mounts.

The vfs and the filesystems targeted by this first iteration make use of
posix_acl_fix_xattr_from_user() and posix_acl_fix_xattr_to_user() to
translate basic posix access and default permissions such as the
ACL_USER and ACL_GROUP type according to the initial user namespace (or
the superblock's user namespace) to and from the caller's current user
namespace. Adapt these two helpers to handle idmapped mounts whereby we
either map from or into the mount's user namespace depending on in which
direction we're translating.
Similarly, cap_convert_nscap() is used by the vfs to translate user
namespace and non-user namespace aware filesystem capabilities from the
superblock's user namespace to the caller's user namespace. Enable it to
handle idmapped mounts by accounting for the mount's user namespace.

In addition the fileystems targeted in the first iteration of this patch
series make use of the posix_acl_chmod() and, posix_acl_update_mode()
helpers. Both helpers perform permission checks on the target inode. Let
them handle idmapped mounts. These two helpers are called when posix
acls are set by the respective filesystems to handle this case we extend
the ->set() method to take an additional user namespace argument to pass
the mount's user namespace down.

2f221d6f7b attr: handle idmapped mounts
When file attributes are changed most filesystems rely on the
setattr_prepare(), setattr_copy(), and notify_change() helpers for
initialization and permission checking. Let them handle idmapped mounts.
If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount map it into the
mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to
non-idmapped mounts. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing
changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before.

Helpers that perform checks on the ia_uid and ia_gid fields in struct
iattr assume that ia_uid and ia_gid are intended values and have already
been mapped correctly at the userspace-kernelspace boundary as we
already do today. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing
changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before.

4ddfc3dc60 hfs/hfsplus: use 64-bit inode timestamps
The interpretation of on-disk timestamps in HFS and HFS+ differs
between 32-bit and 64-bit kernels at the moment. Use 64-bit timestamps
consistently so apply the current 64-bit behavior everyhere.

According to the official documentation for HFS+ [1], inode timestamps
are supposed to cover the time range from 1904 to 2040 as originally
used in classic MacOS.

The traditional Linux usage is to convert the timestamps into an unsigned
32-bit number based on the Unix epoch and from there to a time_t. On
32-bit systems, that wraps the time from 2038 to 1902, so the last
two years of the valid time range become garbled. On 64-bit systems,
all times before 1970 get turned into timestamps between 2038 and 2106,
which is more convenient but also different from the documented behavior.

Looking at the Darwin sources [2], it seems that MacOS is inconsistent in
yet another way: all timestamps are wrapped around to a 32-bit unsigned
number when written to the disk, but when read back, all numeric values
lower than 2082844800U are assumed to be invalid, so we cannot represent
the times before 1970 or the times after 2040.

While all implementations seem to agree on the interpretation of values
between 1970 and 2038, they often differ on the exact range they support
when reading back values outside of the common range:

MacOS (traditional): 1904-2040
Apple Documentation: 1904-2040
MacOS X source comments:	1970-2040
MacOS X source code: 1970-2038
32-bit Linux: 1902-2038
64-bit Linux: 1970-2106
hfsfuse: 1970-2040
hfsutils (32 bit, old libc)	1902-2038
hfsutils (32 bit, new libc)	1970-2106
hfsutils (64 bit) 1904-2040
hfsplus-utils 1904-2040
hfsexplorer 1904-2040
7-zip 1904-2040

Out of the above, the range from 1970 to 2106 seems to be the most useful,
as it allows using HFS and HFS+ beyond year 2038, and this matches the
behavior that most users would see today on Linux, as few people run
32-bit kernels any more.

1267a07be5 hfs: fix return value of hfs_get_block()
Direct writes to empty inodes fail with EIO. The generic direct-io code
is in part to blame (a patch has been submitted as "direct-io: allow
direct writes to empty inodes"), but hfs is worse affected than the other

The problem is the return value of hfs_get_block() when called with
!create. Change it to be more consistent with the other modules.

54640c7502 hfs: prevent btree data loss on ENOSPC
Inserting a new record in a btree may require splitting several of its
nodes. If we hit ENOSPC halfway through, the new nodes will be left
orphaned and their records will be lost. This could mean lost inodes or
extents.

Henceforth, check the available disk space before making any changes.
This still leaves the potential problem of corruption on ENOMEM.

There is no need to reserve space before deleting a catalog record, as we
do for hfsplus. This difference is because hfs index nodes have fixed
length keys.

7a932516f5 Merge tag 'vfs-timespec64' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/playground
Pull inode timestamps conversion to timespec64 from Arnd Bergmann:
"This is a late set of changes from Deepa Dinamani doing an automated
treewide conversion of the inode and iattr structures from 'timespec'
to 'timespec64', to push the conversion from the VFS layer into the
  individual file systems.

  As Deepa writes:

'The series aims to switch vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64.
Currently vfs uses struct timespec, which is not y2038 safe.

    The series involves the following:
    1. Add vfs helper functions for supporting struct timepec64
       timestamps.
    2. Cast prints of vfs timestamps to avoid warnings after the switch.
    3. Simplify code using vfs timestamps so that the actual replacement
       becomes easy.
    4. Convert vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64 using a script.
This is a flag day patch.

    Next steps:
    1. Convert APIs that can handle timespec64, instead of converting
       timestamps at the boundaries.
    2. Update internal data structures to avoid timestamp conversions'

  Thomas Gleixner adds:

'I think there is no point to drag that out for the next merge
window. The whole thing needs to be done in one go for the core
changes which means that you're going to play that catchup game
forever. Let's get over with it towards the end of the merge window'"

95582b0083 vfs: change inode times to use struct timespec64
struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Transition vfs to use
y2038 safe struct timespec64 instead.

The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle
script. This catches about 80% of the changes.
All the header file and logic changes are included in the
first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions.
I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other
filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple
for review.

The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases.
But, this version was sufficient for my usecase.

0e5c56fd07 hfs: don't allow mounting over .../rsrc
That's one case when unlink() destroys a subtree, thanks to "resource

for now let's just disallow overmounting; as it is, anything that
plays games with those would leak mounts.

1751e8a6cb Rename superblock flags (MS_xyz -> SB_xyz)
This is a pure automated search-and-replace of the internal kernel
superblock flags.

The s_flags are now called SB_*, with the names and the values for the
moment mirroring the MS_* flags that they're equivalent to.

Note how the MS_xyz flags are the ones passed to the mount system call,
while the SB_xyz flags are what we then use in sb->s_flags.

The script to do this was:

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 11139

and resulted in the first patch in this series.

If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930

and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

3b49c9a1e9 fs: convert a pile of fsync routines to errseq_t based reporting
This patch converts most of the in-kernel filesystems that do writeback
out of the pagecache to report errors using the errseq_t-based
infrastructure that was recently added. This allows them to report
errors once for each open file description.

Most filesystems have a fairly straightforward fsync operation. They
call filemap_write_and_wait_range to write back all of the data and
wait on it, and then (sometimes) sync out the metadata.

For those filesystems this is a straightforward conversion from calling
filemap_write_and_wait_range in their fsync operation to calling
file_write_and_wait_range.

Commit afddba49d1 ("fs: introduce write_begin, write_end, and

Between these two commits, commit d9414774dc ("cifs: Convert cifs to

removed by commit a98ee8c1c7 ("[CIFS] fix regression in
cifs_write_begin/cifs_write_end").

Therefore, AOP_FLAG_UNINTERRUPTIBLE flag is checked nowhere. Let's
remove this flag. This patch has no functionality changes.
