exec: Fix ToCToU between perm check and set-uid/gid usage
commit f50733b45d865f91db90919f8311e2127ce5a0cb upstream. When opening a file for exec via do_filp_open(), permission checking is done against the file's metadata at that moment, and on success, a file pointer is passed back. Much later in the execve() code path, the file metadata (specifically mode, uid, and gid) is used to determine if/how to set the uid and gid. However, those values may have changed since the permissions check, meaning the execution may gain unintended privileges. For example, if a file could change permissions from executable and not set-id: ---------x 1 root root 16048 Aug 7 13:16 target to set-id and non-executable: ---S------ 1 root root 16048 Aug 7 13:16 target it is possible to gain root privileges when execution should have been disallowed. While this race condition is rare in real-world scenarios, it has been observed (and proven exploitable) when package managers are updating the setuid bits of installed programs. Such files start with being world-executable but then are adjusted to be group-exec with a set-uid bit. For example, "chmod o-x,u+s target" makes "target" executable only by uid "root" and gid "cdrom", while also becoming setuid-root: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root cdrom 16048 Aug 7 13:16 target becomes: -rwsr-xr-- 1 root cdrom 16048 Aug 7 13:16 target But racing the chmod means users without group "cdrom" membership can get the permission to execute "target" just before the chmod, and when the chmod finishes, the exec reaches brpm_fill_uid(), and performs the setuid to root, violating the expressed authorization of "only cdrom group members can setuid to root". Re-check that we still have execute permissions in case the metadata has changed. It would be better to keep a copy from the perm-check time, but until we can do that refactoring, the least-bad option is to do a full inode_permission() call (under inode lock). It is understood that this is safe against dead-locks, but hardly optimal. exec: Fix NOMMU linux_binprm::exec in transfer_args_to_stack()
commit 2aea94ac14d1e0a8ae9e34febebe208213ba72f7 upstream. In NOMMU kernel the value of linux_binprm::p is the offset inside the temporary program arguments array maintained in separate pages in the linux_binprm::page. linux_binprm::exec being a copy of linux_binprm::p thus must be adjusted when that array is copied to the user stack. Without that adjustment the value passed by the NOMMU kernel to the ELF program in the AT_EXECFN entry of the aux array doesn't make any sense and it may break programs that try to access memory pointed to by that entry. Adjust linux_binprm::exec before the successful return from the transfer_args_to_stack(). Cc: <stable@vger.kernel.org> Fixes: |

exec: Force single empty string when argv is empty
commit dcd46d897adb70d63e025f175a00a89797d31a43 upstream.
Quoting[1] Ariadne Conill:
"In several other operating systems, it is a hard requirement that the
second argument to execve(2) be the name of a program, thus prohibiting
a scenario where argc < 1. POSIX 2017 also recommends this behaviour,
but it is not an explicit requirement[2]:
The argument arg0 should point to a filename string that is
associated with the process being started by one of the exec
functions.
...
Interestingly, Michael Kerrisk opened an issue about this in 2008[3],
but there was no consensus to support fixing this issue then.
Hopefully now that CVE-2021-4034 shows practical exploitative use[4]
of this bug in a shellcode, we can reconsider.
This issue is being tracked in the KSPP issue tracker[5]."
While the initial code searches[6][7] turned up what appeared to be
mostly corner case tests, trying to that just reject argv == NULL
(or an immediately terminated pointer list) quickly started tripping[8]
existing userspace programs.
The next best approach is forcing a single empty string into argv and
adjusting argc to match. The number of programs depending on argc == 0
seems a smaller set than those calling execve with a NULL argv.
Account for the additional stack space in bprm_stack_limits(). Inject an
empty string when argc == 0 (and set argc = 1). Warn about the case so
userspace has some notice about the change:
process './argc0' launched './argc0' with NULL argv: empty string added
Additionally WARN() and reject NULL argv usage for kernel threads.

vfs: check fd has read access in kernel_read_file_from_fd()
commit 032146cda85566abcd1c4884d9d23e4e30a07e9a upstream.
If we open a file without read access and then pass the fd to a syscall
whose implementation calls kernel_read_file_from_fd(), we get a warning
from __kernel_read():
if (WARN_ON_ONCE(!(file->f_mode & FMODE_READ)))
This currently affects both finit_module() and kexec_file_load(), but it
could affect other syscalls in the future.

exit/exec: Seperate mm_release()
commit 4610ba7ad877fafc0a25a30c6c82015304120426 upstream mm_release() contains the futex exit handling. mm_release() is called from do_exit()->exit_mm() and from exec()->exec_mm(). In the exit_mm() case PF_EXITING and the futex state is updated. In the exec_mm() case these states are not touched. As the futex exit code needs further protections against exit races, this needs to be split into two functions. Preparatory only, no functional change. [ALPS04983389] FROMLIST: mm: introduce INIT_VMA()
(from https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/906213/) Some VMA struct fields need to be initialized once the VMA structure is allocated. Currently this only concerns anon_vma_chain field but some other will be added to support the speculative page fault. Instead of spreading the initialization calls all over the code, lets introduce a dedicated inline function. mm: fix exec activate_mm vs TLB shootdown and lazy tlb switching race
commit d53c3dfb23c45f7d4f910c3a3ca84bf0a99c6143 upstream.
Reading and modifying current->mm and current->active_mm and switching
mm should be done with irqs off, to prevent races seeing an intermediate
state.
This is similar to commit 38cf307c1f20 ("mm: fix kthread_use_mm() vs TLB
invalidate"). At exec-time when the new mm is activated, the old one
should usually be single-threaded and no longer used, unless something
else is holding an mm_users reference (which may be possible).
Absent other mm_users, there is also a race with preemption and lazy tlb
switching. Consider the kernel_execve case where the current thread is
using a lazy tlb active mm:
call_usermodehelper()
kernel_execve()
old_mm = current->mm;
active_mm = current->active_mm;
*** preempt *** --------------------> schedule()
prev->active_mm = NULL;
mmdrop(prev active_mm);
...
<-------------------- schedule()
current->mm = mm;
current->active_mm = mm;
if (!old_mm)
mmdrop(active_mm);
If we switch back to the kernel thread from a different mm, there is a
double free of the old active_mm, and a missing free of the new one.
Closing this race only requires interrupts to be disabled while ->mm
and ->active_mm are being switched, but the TLB problem requires also
holding interrupts off over activate_mm. Unfortunately not all archs
can do that yet, e.g., arm defers the switch if irqs are disabled and
expects finish_arch_post_lock_switch() to be called to complete the
flush; um takes a blocking lock in activate_mm().
So as a first step, disable interrupts across the mm/active_mm updates
to close the lazy tlb preempt race, and provide an arch option to
extend that to activate_mm which allows architectures doing IPI based
TLB shootdowns to close the second race.
This is a bit ugly, but in the interest of fixing the bug and backporting
before all architectures are converted this is a compromise.

exec: Move would_dump into flush_old_exec
commit f87d1c9559164294040e58f5e3b74a162bf7c6e8 upstream.
I goofed when I added mm->user_ns support to would_dump. I missed the
fact that in the case of binfmt_loader, binfmt_em86, binfmt_misc, and
binfmt_script bprm->file is reassigned. Which made the move of
would_dump from setup_new_exec to __do_execve_file before exec_binprm
incorrect as it can result in would_dump running on the script instead
of the interpreter of the script.
The net result is that the code stopped making unreadable interpreters
undumpable. Which allows them to be ptraced and written to disk
without special permissions. Oops.
The move was necessary because the call in set_new_exec was after
bprm->mm was no longer valid.
To correct this mistake move the misplaced would_dump from
__do_execve_file into flos_old_exec, before exec_mmap is called.
I tested and confirmed that without this fix I can attach with gdb to
a script with an unreadable interpreter, and with this fix I can not.

signal: Extend exec_id to 64bits
commit d1e7fd6462ca9fc76650fbe6ca800e35b24267da upstream. Replace the 32bit exec_id with a 64bit exec_id to make it impossible to wrap the exec_id counter. With care an attacker can cause exec_id wrap and send arbitrary signals to a newly exec'd parent. This bypasses the signal sending checks if the parent changes their credentials during exec. The severity of this problem can been seen that in my limited testing of a 32bit exec_id it can take as little as 19s to exec 65536 times. Which means that it can take as little as 14 days to wrap a 32bit exec_id. Adam Zabrocki has succeeded wrapping the self_exe_id in 7 days. Even my slower timing is in the uptime of a typical server. Which means self_exec_id is simply a speed bump today, and if exec gets noticably faster self_exec_id won't even be a speed bump. Extending self_exec_id to 64bits introduces a problem on 32bit architectures where reading self_exec_id is no longer atomic and can take two read instructions. Which means that is is possible to hit a window where the read value of exec_id does not match the written value. So with very lucky timing after this change this still remains expoiltable. I have updated the update of exec_id on exec to use WRITE_ONCE and the read of exec_id in do_notify_parent to use READ_ONCE to make it clear that there is no locking between these two locations. sched/fair: Don't free p->numa_faults with concurrent readers
commit 16d51a590a8ce3befb1308e0e7ab77f3b661af33 upstream.
When going through execve(), zero out the NUMA fault statistics instead of
freeing them.
During execve, the task is reachable through procfs and the scheduler. A
concurrent /proc/*/sched reader can read data from a freed ->numa_faults
allocation (confirmed by KASAN) and write it back to userspace.
I believe that it would also be possible for a use-after-free read to occur
through a race between a NUMA fault and execve(): task_numa_fault() can
lead to task_numa_compare(), which invokes task_weight() on the currently
running task of a different CPU.
Another way to fix this would be to make ->numa_faults RCU-managed or add
extra locking, but it seems easier to wipe the NUMA fault statistics on
execve.

Pull core signal handling updates from Eric Biederman:
"It was observed that a periodic timer in combination with a
sufficiently expensive fork could prevent fork from every completing.
This contains the changes to remove the need for that restart.
This set of changes is split into several parts:
- The first part makes PIDTYPE_TGID a proper pid type instead
something only for very special cases. The part starts using
PIDTYPE_TGID enough so that in __send_signal where signals are
actually delivered we know if the signal is being sent to a a group
of processes or just a single process.
- With that prep work out of the way the logic in fork is modified so
that fork logically makes signals received while it is running
appear to be received after the fork completes"

mm: use helper functions for allocating and freeing vm_area structs
The vm_area_struct is one of the most fundamental memory management
objects, but the management of it is entirely open-coded evertwhere,
ranging from allocation and freeing (using kmem_cache_[z]alloc and
kmem_cache_free) to initializing all the fields.
We want to unify this in order to end up having some unified
initialization of the vmas, and the first step to this is to at least
have basic allocation functions.
Right now those functions are literally just wrappers around the
kmem_cache_*() calls. This is a purely mechanical conversion:
# new vma:
kmem_cache_zalloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_alloc()
# copy old vma
kmem_cache_alloc(vm_area_cachep, GFP_KERNEL) -> vm_area_dup(old)
# free vma
kmem_cache_free(vm_area_cachep, vma) -> vm_area_free(vma)
to the point where the old vma passed in to the vm_area_dup() function
isn't even used yet (because I've left all the old manual initialization
alone).

pid: Implement PIDTYPE_TGID
Everywhere except in the pid array we distinguish between a tasks pid and a tasks tgid (thread group id). Even in the enumeration we want that distinction sometimes so we have added __PIDTYPE_TGID. With leader_pid we almost have an implementation of PIDTYPE_TGID in struct signal_struct. Add PIDTYPE_TGID as a first class member of the pid_type enumeration and into the pids array. Then remove the __PIDTYPE_TGID special case and the leader_pid in signal_struct. The net size increase is just an extra pointer added to struct pid and an extra pair of pointers of an hlist_node added to task_struct. The effect on code maintenance is the removal of a number of special cases today and the potential to remove many more special cases as PIDTYPE_TGID gets used to it's fullest. The long term potential is allowing zombie thread group leaders to exit, which will remove a lot more special cases in the code. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

rseq: Introduce restartable sequences system call
Expose a new system call allowing each thread to register one userspace memory area to be used as an ABI between kernel and user-space for two purposes: user-space restartable sequences and quick access to read the current CPU number value from user-space. * Restartable sequences (per-cpu atomics) Restartables sequences allow user-space to perform update operations on per-cpu data without requiring heavy-weight atomic operations. The restartable critical sections (percpu atomics) work has been started by Paul Turner and Andrew Hunter. It lets the kernel handle restart of critical sections. [1] [2] The re-implementation proposed here brings a few simplifications to the ABI which facilitates porting to other architectures and speeds up the user-space fast path. Here are benchmarks of various rseq use-cases. Test hardware: arm32: ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v7l) "Cubietruck", 2-core x86-64: Intel E5-2630 v3@2.40GHz, 16-core, hyperthreading The following benchmarks were all performed on a single thread. * Per-CPU statistic counter increment getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup arm32: 344.0 31.4 11.0 x86-64: 15.3 2.0 7.7 * LTTng-UST: write event 32-bit header, 32-bit payload into tracer per-cpu buffer getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup arm32: 2502.0 2250.0 1.1 x86-64: 117.4 98.0 1.2 * liburcu percpu: lock-unlock pair, dereference, read/compare word getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup arm32: 751.0 128.5 5.8 x86-64: 53.4 28.6 1.9 * jemalloc memory allocator adapted to use rseq Using rseq with per-cpu memory pools in jemalloc at Facebook (based on rseq 2016 implementation): The production workload response-time has 1-2% gain avg. latency, and the P99 overall latency drops by 2-3%. * Reading the current CPU number Speeding up reading the current CPU number on which the caller thread is running is done by keeping the current CPU number up do date within the cpu_id field of the memory area registered by the thread. This is done by making scheduler preemption set the TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME flag on the current thread. Upon return to user-space, a notify-resume handler updates the current CPU value within the registered user-space memory area. User-space can then read the current CPU number directly from memory. Keeping the current cpu id in a memory area shared between kernel and user-space is an improvement over current mechanisms available to read the current CPU number, which has the following benefits over alternative approaches: - 35x speedup on ARM vs system call through glibc - 20x speedup on x86 compared to calling glibc, which calls vdso executing a "lsl" instruction, - 14x speedup on x86 compared to inlined "lsl" instruction, - Unlike vdso approaches, this cpu_id value can be read from an inline assembly, which makes it a useful building block for restartable sequences. - The approach of reading the cpu id through memory mapping shared between kernel and user-space is portable (e.g. ARM), which is not the case for the lsl-based x86 vdso. On x86, yet another possible approach would be to use the gs segment selector to point to user-space per-cpu data. This approach performs similarly to the cpu id cache, but it has two disadvantages: it is not portable, and it is incompatible with existing applications already using the gs segment selector for other purposes. Benchmarking various approaches for reading the current CPU number: ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v7l) Machine model: Cubietruck - Baseline (empty loop): 8.4 ns - Read CPU from rseq cpu_id: 16.7 ns - Read CPU from rseq cpu_id (lazy register): 19.8 ns - glibc 2.19-0ubuntu6.6 getcpu: 301.8 ns - getcpu system call: 234.9 ns x86-64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz: - Baseline (empty loop): 0.8 ns - Read CPU from rseq cpu_id: 0.8 ns - Read CPU from rseq cpu_id (lazy register): 0.8 ns - Read using gs segment selector: 0.8 ns - "lsl" inline assembly: 13.0 ns - glibc 2.19-0ubuntu6 getcpu: 16.6 ns - getcpu system call: 53.9 ns - Speed (benchmark taken on v8 of patchset) Running 10 runs of hackbench -l 100000 seems to indicate, contrary to expectations, that enabling CONFIG_RSEQ slightly accelerates the scheduler: Configuration: 2 sockets * 8-core Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz (directly on hardware, hyperthreading disabled in BIOS, energy saving disabled in BIOS, turboboost disabled in BIOS, cpuidle.off=1 kernel parameter), with a Linux v4.6 defconfig+localyesconfig, restartable sequences series applied. * CONFIG_RSEQ=n avg.: 41.37 s std.dev.: 0.36 s * CONFIG_RSEQ=y avg.: 40.46 s std.dev.: 0.33 s - Size On x86-64, between CONFIG_RSEQ=n/y, the text size increase of vmlinux is 567 bytes, and the data size increase of vmlinux is 5696 bytes. umh: introduce fork_usermode_blob() helper
Introduce helper:
int fork_usermode_blob(void *data, size_t len, struct umh_info *info);
struct umh_info {
struct file *pipe_to_umh;
struct file *pipe_from_umh;
pid_t pid;
};
that GPLed kernel modules (signed or unsigned) can use it to execute part
of its own data as swappable user mode process.
The kernel will do:
- allocate a unique file in tmpfs
- populate that file with [data, data + len] bytes
- user-mode-helper code will do_execve that file and, before the process
starts, the kernel will create two unix pipes for bidirectional
communication between kernel module and umh
- close tmpfs file, effectively deleting it
- the fork_usermode_blob will return zero on success and populate
'struct umh_info' with two unix pipes and the pid of the user process
As the first step in the development of the bpfilter project
the fork_usermode_blob() helper is introduced to allow user mode code
to be invoked from a kernel module. The idea is that user mode code plus
normal kernel module code are built as part of the kernel build
and installed as traditional kernel module into distro specified location,
such that from a distribution point of view, there is
no difference between regular kernel modules and kernel modules + umh code.
Such modules can be signed, modprobed, rmmod, etc. The use of this new helper
by a kernel module doesn't make it any special from kernel and user space
tooling point of view.
Such approach enables kernel to delegate functionality traditionally done
by the kernel modules into the user space processes (either root or !root) and
reduces security attack surface of the new code. The buggy umh code would crash
the user process, but not the kernel. Another advantage is that umh code
of the kernel module can be debugged and tested out of user space
(e.g. opening the possibility to run clang sanitizers, fuzzers or
user space test suites on the umh code).
In case of the bpfilter project such architecture allows complex control plane
to be done in the user space while bpf based data plane stays in the kernel.
Since umh can crash, can be oom-ed by the kernel, killed by the admin,
the kernel module that uses them (like bpfilter) needs to manage life
time of umh on its own via two unix pipes and the pid of umh.
The exit code of such kernel module should kill the umh it started,
so that rmmod of the kernel module will cleanup the corresponding umh.
Just like if the kernel module does kmalloc() it should kfree() it
in the exit code.

exec: pin stack limit during exec
Since the stack rlimit is used in multiple places during exec and it can
be changed via other threads (via setrlimit()) or processes (via
prlimit()), the assumption that the value doesn't change cannot be made.
This leads to races with mm layout selection and argument size
calculations. This changes the exec path to use the rlimit stored in

exec: pass stack rlimit into mm layout functions
Patch series "exec: Pin stack limit during exec". Attempts to solve problems with the stack limit changing during exec continue to be frustrated[1][2]. In addition to the specific issues around the Stack Clash family of flaws, Andy Lutomirski pointed out[3] other places during exec where the stack limit is used and is assumed to be unchanging. Given the many places it gets used and the fact that it can be manipulated/raced via setrlimit() and prlimit(), I think the only way to handle this is to move away from the "current" view of the stack limit and instead attach it to the bprm, and plumb this down into the functions that need to know the stack limits. This series implements the approach. [1] |

exec: Set file unwritable before LSM check
The LSM check should happen after the file has been confirmed to be unchanging. Without this, we could have a race between the Time of Check (the call to security_kernel_read_file() which could read the file and make access policy decisions) and the Time of Use (starting with kernel_read_file()'s reading of the file contents). In theory, file contents could change between the two. exec: avoid gcc-8 warning for get_task_comm
gcc-8 warns about using strncpy() with the source size as the limit: fs/exec.c:1223:32: error: argument to 'sizeof' in 'strncpy' call is the same expression as the source; did you mean to use the size of the destination? [-Werror=sizeof-pointer-memaccess] This is indeed slightly suspicious, as it protects us from source arguments without NUL-termination, but does not guarantee that the destination is terminated. This keeps the strncpy() to ensure we have properly padded target buffer, but ensures that we use the correct length, by passing the actual length of the destination buffer as well as adding a build-time check to ensure it is exactly TASK_COMM_LEN. There are only 23 callsites which I all reviewed to ensure this is currently the case. We could get away with doing only the check or passing the right length, but it doesn't hurt to do both. exec: avoid RLIMIT_STACK races with prlimit()
While the defense-in-depth RLIMIT_STACK limit on setuid processes was
protected against races from other threads calling setrlimit(), I missed
protecting it against races from external processes calling prlimit().
This adds locking around the change and makes sure that rlim_max is set
too.

locking/atomics: COCCINELLE/treewide: Convert trivial ACCESS_ONCE() patterns to READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE()
Please do not apply this to mainline directly, instead please re-run the
coccinelle script shown below and apply its output.
For several reasons, it is desirable to use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() in
preference to ACCESS_ONCE(), and new code is expected to use one of the
former. So far, there's been no reason to change most existing uses of
ACCESS_ONCE(), as these aren't harmful, and changing them results in
churn.
However, for some features, the read/write distinction is critical to
correct operation. To distinguish these cases, separate read/write
accessors must be used. This patch migrates (most) remaining
ACCESS_ONCE() instances to {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(), using the following
coccinelle script:
----
// Convert trivial ACCESS_ONCE() uses to equivalent READ_ONCE() and
// WRITE_ONCE()
// $ make coccicheck COCCI=/home/mark/once.cocci SPFLAGS="--include-headers" MODE=patch

membarrier: Provide register expedited private command
This introduces a "register private expedited" membarrier command which allows eventual removal of important memory barrier constraints on the scheduler fast-paths. It changes how the "private expedited" membarrier command (new to 4.14) is used from user-space. This new command allows processes to register their intent to use the private expedited command. This affects how the expedited private command introduced in 4.14-rc is meant to be used, and should be merged before 4.14 final. Processes are now required to register before using MEMBARRIER_CMD_PRIVATE_EXPEDITED, otherwise that command returns EPERM. This fixes a problem that arose when designing requested extensions to sys_membarrier() to allow JITs to efficiently flush old code from instruction caches. Several potential algorithms are much less painful if the user register intent to use this functionality early on, for example, before the process spawns the second thread. Registering at this time removes the need to interrupt each and every thread in that process at the first expedited sys_membarrier() system call.
