drm/mipi-dsi: Fix detach call without attach
[ Upstream commit 90d50b8d85834e73536fdccd5aa913b30494fef0 ] It's been reported that DSI host driver's detach can be called without the attach ever happening: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230412073954.20601-1-tony@atomide.com/ After reading the code, I think this is what happens: We have a DSI host defined in the device tree and a DSI peripheral under that host (i.e. an i2c device using the DSI as data bus doesn't exhibit this behavior). The host driver calls mipi_dsi_host_register(), which causes (via a few functions) mipi_dsi_device_add() to be called for the DSI peripheral. So now we have a DSI device under the host, but attach hasn't been called. Normally the probing of the devices continues, and eventually the DSI peripheral's driver will call mipi_dsi_attach(), attaching the peripheral. However, if the host driver's probe encounters an error after calling mipi_dsi_host_register(), and before the peripheral has called mipi_dsi_attach(), the host driver will do cleanups and return an error from its probe function. The cleanups include calling mipi_dsi_host_unregister(). mipi_dsi_host_unregister() will call two functions for all its DSI peripheral devices: mipi_dsi_detach() and mipi_dsi_device_unregister(). The latter makes sense, as the device exists, but the former may be wrong as attach has not necessarily been done. To fix this, track the attached state of the peripheral, and only detach from mipi_dsi_host_unregister() if the peripheral was attached. Note that I have only tested this with a board with an i2c DSI peripheral, not with a "pure" DSI peripheral. However, slightly related, the unregister machinery still seems broken. E.g. if the DSI host driver is unbound, it'll detach and unregister the DSI peripherals. After that, when the DSI peripheral driver unbound it'll call detach either directly or using the devm variant, leading to a crash. And probably the driver will crash if it happens, for some reason, to try to send a message via the DSI bus. But that's another topic. Tested-by: H. drm/mipi-dsi: Fix byte order of 16-bit DCS set/get brightness
[ Upstream commit c9d27c6be518b4ef2966d9564654ef99292ea1b3 ] The MIPI DCS specification demands that brightness values are sent in big endian byte order. It also states that one parameter (i.e. one byte) shall be sent/received for 8 bit wide values, and two parameters shall be used for values that are between 9 and 16 bits wide. Add new functions to properly handle 16-bit brightness in big endian, since the two 8- and 16-bit cases are distinct from each other. [richard: use separate functions instead of switch/case] [richard: split into 16-bit component] Fixes: |

drm: fix EDID struct for old ARM OABI format
[ Upstream commit 47f15561b69e226bfc034e94ff6dbec51a4662af ]
When building the kernel for arm with the "-mabi=apcs-gnu" option, gcc
will force alignment of all structures and unions to a word boundary
(see also STRUCTURE_SIZE_BOUNDARY and the "-mstructure-size-boundary=XX"
option if you're a gcc person), even when the members of said structures
do not want or need said alignment.
This completely messes up the structure alignment of 'struct edid' on
those targets, because even though all the embedded structures are
marked with "__attribute__((packed))", the unions that contain them are
not.
This was exposed by commit f1e4c916f97f ("drm/edid: add EDID block count
and size helpers"), but the bug is pre-existing. That commit just made
the structure layout problem cause a build failure due to the addition
of the
BUILD_BUG_ON(sizeof(*edid) != EDID_LENGTH);
sanity check in drivers/gpu/drm/drm_edid.c:edid_block_data().
This legacy union alignment should probably not be used in the first
place, but we can fix the layout by adding the packed attribute to the
union entries even when each member is already packed and it shouldn't
matter in a sane build environment.
You can see this issue with a trivial test program:
union {
struct {
char c[5];
};
struct {
char d;
unsigned e;
} __attribute__((packed));
} a = { "1234" };
where building this with a normal "gcc -S" will result in the expected
5-byte size of said union:
.type a, @object
.size a, 5
but with an ARM compiler and the old ABI:
arm-linux-gnu-gcc -mabi=apcs-gnu -mfloat-abi=soft -S t.c
you get
.type a, %object
.size a, 8
instead, because even though each member of the union is packed, the
union itself still gets aligned.
This was reported by Sudip for the spear3xx_defconfig target.

drm: Return -ENOTTY for non-drm ioctls
commit 3abab27c322e0f2acf981595aa8040c9164dc9fb upstream. drm: Return -ENOTTY for non-drm ioctls Return -ENOTTY from drm_ioctl() when userspace passes in a cmd number which doesn't relate to the drm subsystem. Glibc uses the TCGETS ioctl to implement isatty(), and without this change isatty() returns it incorrectly returns true for drm devices. To test run this command: $ if [ -t 0 ]; then echo is a tty; fi < /dev/dri/card0 which shows "is a tty" without this patch. This may also modify memory which the userspace application is not expecting. drm/i915: Prevent writing into a read-only object via a GGTT mmap
commit 3e977ac6179b39faa3c0eda5fce4f00663ae298d upstream. If the user has created a read-only object, they should not be allowed to circumvent the write protection by using a GGTT mmapping. Deny it. Also most machines do not support read-only GGTT PTEs, so again we have to reject attempted writes. Fortunately, this is known a priori, so we can at least reject in the call to create the mmap (with a sanity check in the fault handler). v2: Check the vma->vm_flags during mmap() to allow readonly access. v3: Remove VM_MAYWRITE to curtail mprotect() Testcase: igt/gem_userptr_blits/readonly_mmap* Signed-off-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Cc: Jon Bloomfield <jon.bloomfield@intel.com> Cc: Joonas Lahtinen <joonas.lahtinen@linux.intel.com> Cc: Matthew Auld <matthew.william.auld@gmail.com> Cc: David Herrmann <dh.herrmann@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Matthew Auld <matthew.william.auld@gmail.com> #v1 Reviewed-by: Jon Bloomfield <jon.bloomfield@intel.com> Reviewed-by: Joonas Lahtinen <joonas.lahtinen@linux.intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20180712185315.3288-4-chris@chris-wilson.co.uk Signed-off-by: Rodrigo Vivi <rodrigo.vivi@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> |

drm: don't block fb changes for async plane updates
commit 89a4aac0ab0e6f5eea10d7bf4869dd15c3de2cd4 upstream. In the case of a normal sync update, the preparation of framebuffers (be it calling drm_atomic_helper_prepare_planes() or doing setups with drm_framebuffer_get()) are performed in the new_state and the respective cleanups are performed in the old_state. In the case of async updates, the preparation is also done in the new_state but the cleanups are done in the new_state (because updates are performed in place, i.e. in the current state). The current code blocks async udpates when the fb is changed, turning async updates into sync updates, slowing down cursor updates and introducing regressions in igt tests with errors of type: "CRITICAL: completed 97 cursor updated in a period of 30 flips, we expect to complete approximately 15360 updates, with the threshold set at 7680" Fb changes in async updates were prevented to avoid the following scenario: - Async update, oldfb = NULL, newfb = fb1, prepare fb1, cleanup fb1 - Async update, oldfb = fb1, newfb = fb2, prepare fb2, cleanup fb2 - Non-async commit, oldfb = fb2, newfb = fb1, prepare fb1, cleanup fb2 (wrong) Where we have a single call to prepare fb2 but double cleanup call to fb2. To solve the above problems, instead of blocking async fb changes, we place the old framebuffer in the new_state object, so when the code performs cleanups in the new_state it will cleanup the old_fb and we will have the following scenario instead: - Async update, oldfb = NULL, newfb = fb1, prepare fb1, no cleanup - Async update, oldfb = fb1, newfb = fb2, prepare fb2, cleanup fb1 - Non-async commit, oldfb = fb2, newfb = fb1, prepare fb1, cleanup fb2 Where calls to prepare/cleanup are balanced. drm: disable uncached DMA optimization for ARM and arm64
[ Upstream commit e02f5c1bb2283cfcee68f2f0feddcc06150f13aa ] The DRM driver stack is designed to work with cache coherent devices only, but permits an optimization to be enabled in some cases, where for some buffers, both the CPU and the GPU use uncached mappings, removing the need for DMA snooping and allocation in the CPU caches. The use of uncached GPU mappings relies on the correct implementation of the PCIe NoSnoop TLP attribute by the platform, otherwise the GPU will use cached mappings nonetheless. On x86 platforms, this does not seem to matter, as uncached CPU mappings will snoop the caches in any case. However, on ARM and arm64, enabling this optimization on a platform where NoSnoop is ignored results in loss of coherency, which breaks correct operation of the device. Since we have no way of detecting whether NoSnoop works or not, just disable this optimization entirely for ARM and arm64. drm/nouveau: prefer XBGR2101010 for addfb ioctl
commit c20bb155c2c5acb775f68be5d84fe679687c3c1e upstream. Nouveau only exposes support for XBGR2101010. Prior to the atomic conversion, drm would pass in the wrong format in the framebuffer, but it was always ignored -- both userspace (xf86-video-nouveau) and the kernel driver agreed on the layout, so the fact that the format was wrong didn't matter. With the atomic conversion, nouveau all of a sudden started caring about the exact format, and so the previously-working code in xf86-video-nouveau no longer functioned since the (internally-assigned) format from the addfb ioctl was wrong. This change adds infrastructure to allow a drm driver to specify that it prefers the XBGR format variant for the addfb ioctl, and makes nouveau's nv50 display driver set it. drm: Allow determining if current task is output poll worker
commit 25c058ccaf2ebbc3e250ec1e199e161f91fe27d4 upstream.
Introduce a helper to determine if the current task is an output poll
worker.
This allows us to fix a long-standing deadlock in several DRM drivers
wherein the ->runtime_suspend callback waits for the output poll worker
to finish and the worker in turn calls a ->detect callback which waits
for runtime suspend to finish. The ->detect callback is invoked from
multiple call sites and waiting for runtime suspend to finish is the
correct thing to do except if it's executing in the context of the
worker.

output poll worker and autosuspend worker as use case. (Lyude)

drm/edid: Don't send non-zero YQ in AVI infoframe for HDMI 1.x sinks
commit 9271c0ca573e02a360b636ecd8cb408852f4e9f6 upstream.
Apparently some sinks look at the YQ bits even when receiving RGB,
and they get somehow confused when they see a non-zero YQ value.
So we can't just blindly follow CEA-861-F and set YQ to match the
RGB range.
Unfortunately there is no good way to tell whether the sink
designer claims to have read CEA-861-F. The CEA extension block
revision number has generally been stuck at 3 since forever,
and even a very recently manufactured sink might be based on
an old design so the manufacturing date doesn't seem like
something we can use. In lieu of better information let's
follow CEA-861-F only for HDMI 2.0 sinks, since HDMI 2.0 is
based on CEA-861-F. For HDMI 1.x sinks we'll always set YQ=0.
The alternative would of course be to always set YQ=0. And if
we ever encounter a HDMI 2.0+ sink with this bug that's what
we'll probably have to do.

License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. lib/interval_tree: fast overlap detection
Allow interval trees to quickly check for overlaps to avoid unnecesary tree lookups in interval_tree_iter_first(). As of this patch, all interval tree flavors will require using a 'rb_root_cached' such that we can have the leftmost node easily available. While most users will make use of this feature, those with special functions (in addition to the generic insert, delete, search calls) will avoid using the cached option as they can do funky things with insertions -- for example, vma_interval_tree_insert_after(). drm/syncobj: Add a callback mechanism for replace_fence (v3)
It is useful in certain circumstances to know when the fence is replaced in a syncobj. Specifically, it may be useful to know when the fence goes from NULL to something valid. This does make syncobj_replace_fence a little more expensive because it has to take a lock but, in the common case where there is no callback list, it spends a very short amount of time inside the lock. v2: - Don't lock in drm_syncobj_fence_get. We only really need to lock around fence_replace to make the callback work. v3: - Fix the cb_list comment to make kbuild happy Signed-off-by: Jason Ekstrand <jason@jlekstrand.net> Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> |

drm/syncobj: Add a race-free drm_syncobj_fence_get helper (v2)
The atomic exchange operation in drm_syncobj_replace_fence is sufficient for the case where it races with itself. However, if you have a race between a replace_fence and dma_fence_get(syncobj->fence), you may end up with the entire replace_fence happening between the point in time where the one thread gets the syncobj->fence pointer and when it calls dma_fence_get() on it. If this happens, then the reference may be dropped before we get a chance to get a new one. The new helper uses dma_fence_get_rcu_safe to get rid of the race. This is also needed because it allows us to do a bit more than just get a reference in drm_syncobj_fence_get should we wish to do so. v2: - RCU isn't that scary - Call rcu_read_lock/unlock - Don't rename fence to _fence - Make the helper static inline Signed-off-by: Jason Ekstrand <jason@jlekstrand.net> Acked-by: Christian König <christian.koenig@amd.com> (v1) Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> |
