init, x86: Move mem_encrypt_init() into arch_cpu_finalize_init()
commit 439e17576eb47f26b78c5bbc72e344d4206d2327 upstream Invoke the X86ism mem_encrypt_init() from X86 arch_cpu_finalize_init() and remove the weak fallback from the core code. No functional change. init: Invoke arch_cpu_finalize_init() earlier
commit 9df9d2f0471b4c4702670380b8d8a45b40b23a7d upstream X86 is reworking the boot process so that initializations which are not required during early boot can be moved into the late boot process and out of the fragile and restricted initial boot phase. arch_cpu_finalize_init() is the obvious place to do such initializations, but arch_cpu_finalize_init() is invoked too late in start_kernel() e.g. for initializing the FPU completely. fork_init() requires that the FPU is initialized as the size of task_struct on X86 depends on the size of the required FPU register buffer. Fortunately none of the init calls between calibrate_delay() and arch_cpu_finalize_init() is relevant for the functionality of arch_cpu_finalize_init(). Invoke it right after calibrate_delay() where everything which is relevant for arch_cpu_finalize_init() has been set up already. No functional change intended. init: Remove check_bugs() leftovers
commit 61235b24b9cb37c13fcad5b9596d59a1afdcec30 upstream Everything is converted over to arch_cpu_finalize_init(). init: Provide arch_cpu_finalize_init()
commit 7725acaa4f0c04fbefb0e0d342635b967bb7d414 upstream check_bugs() has become a dumping ground for all sorts of activities to finalize the CPU initialization before running the rest of the init code. Most are empty, a few do actual bug checks, some do alternative patching and some cobble a CPU advertisement string together.... Aside of that the current implementation requires duplicated function declaration and mostly empty header files for them. Provide a new function arch_cpu_finalize_init(). Provide a generic declaration if CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_CPU_FINALIZE_INIT is selected and a stub inline otherwise. This requires a temporary #ifdef in start_kernel() which will be removed along with check_bugs() once the architectures are converted over. random: handle latent entropy and command line from random_init()
commit 2f14062bb14b0fcfcc21e6dc7d5b5c0d25966164 upstream. Currently, start_kernel() adds latent entropy and the command line to the entropy bool *after* the RNG has been initialized, deferring when it's actually used by things like stack canaries until the next time the pool is seeded. This surely is not intended. Rather than splitting up which entropy gets added where and when between start_kernel() and random_init(), just do everything in random_init(), which should eliminate these kinds of bugs in the future. While we're at it, rename the awkwardly titled "rand_initialize()" to the more standard "random_init()" nomenclature. init: call time_init() before rand_initialize()
commit fe222a6ca2d53c38433cba5d3be62a39099e708e upstream. Currently time_init() is called after rand_initialize(), but rand_initialize() makes use of the timer on various platforms, and sometimes this timer needs to be initialized by time_init() first. In order for random_get_entropy() to not return zero during early boot when it's potentially used as an entropy source, reverse the order of these two calls. The block doing random initialization was right before time_init() before, so changing the order shouldn't have any complicated effects. random: move rand_initialize() earlier
commit d55535232c3dbde9a523a9d10d68670f5fe5dec3 upstream. Right now rand_initialize() is run as an early_initcall(), but it only depends on timekeeping_init() (for mixing ktime_get_real() into the pools). However, the call to boot_init_stack_canary() for stack canary initialization runs earlier, which triggers a warning at boot: random: get_random_bytes called from start_kernel+0x357/0x548 with crng_init=0 Instead, this moves rand_initialize() to after timekeeping_init(), and moves canary initialization here as well. Note that this warning may still remain for machines that do not have UEFI RNG support (which initializes the RNG pools during setup_arch()), or for x86 machines without RDRAND (or booting without "random.trust=on" or CONFIG_RANDOM_TRUST_CPU=y). init/main.c: return 1 from handled __setup() functions
[ Upstream commit f9a40b0890658330c83c95511f9d6b396610defc ] initcall_blacklist() should return 1 to indicate that it handled its cmdline arguments. set_debug_rodata() should return 1 to indicate that it handled its cmdline arguments. Print a warning if the option string is invalid. This prevents these strings from being added to the 'init' program's environment as they are not init arguments/parameters. bpf: Add kconfig knob for disabling unpriv bpf by default
commit 08389d888287c3823f80b0216766b71e17f0aba5 upstream.
Add a kconfig knob which allows for unprivileged bpf to be disabled by default.
If set, the knob sets /proc/sys/kernel/unprivileged_bpf_disabled to value of 2.
This still allows a transition of 2 -> {0,1} through an admin. Similarly,
this also still keeps 1 -> {1} behavior intact, so that once set to permanently
disabled, it cannot be undone aside from a reboot.
We've also added extra2 with max of 2 for the procfs handler, so that an admin
still has a chance to toggle between 0 <-> 2.
Either way, as an additional alternative, applications can make use of CAP_BPF
that we added a while ago.

pid: take a reference when initializing cad_pid
commit 0711f0d7050b9e07c44bc159bbc64ac0a1022c7f upstream. During boot, kernel_init_freeable() initializes `cad_pid` to the init task's struct pid. Later on, we may change `cad_pid` via a sysctl, and when this happens proc_do_cad_pid() will increment the refcount on the new pid via get_pid(), and will decrement the refcount on the old pid via put_pid(). As we never called get_pid() when we initialized `cad_pid`, we decrement a reference we never incremented, can therefore free the init task's struct pid early. As there can be dangling references to the struct pid, we can later encounter a use-after-free (e.g. when delivering signals). This was spotted when fuzzing v5.13-rc3 with Syzkaller, but seems to have been around since the conversion of `cad_pid` to struct pid in commit |

init/Kconfig: make COMPILE_TEST depend on HAS_IOMEM
commit ea29b20a828511de3348334e529a3d046a180416 upstream.
I read the commit log of the following two:
-
|
||
|
|
fa4261496d |
init/Kconfig: make COMPILE_TEST depend on !S390
commit 334ef6ed06fa1a54e35296b77b693bcf6d63ee9e upstream.
While allmodconfig and allyesconfig build for s390 there are also
various bots running compile tests with randconfig, where PCI is
disabled. This reveals that a lot of drivers should actually depend on
HAS_IOMEM.
Adding this to each device driver would be a never ending story,
therefore just disable COMPILE_TEST for s390.
The reasoning is more or less the same as described in

[ALPS04677823] sched: introduce non-linear frequency control
[Detail] The performance of cpu is not linear increased when frequency raised. Currently kernel use linear formula to calculate cpu capacity, load tracking, and opp control. This may underestimate cpu capacity in lower frequency and let frequency raise quickly. To resolve this problem, we use power table capacity which is generated by real scenario to calculate cpu capacity/load tracking/ opp control. [ALPS04128327] sched/uclamp: map uclamp to opp capacity
[Detail] The final result of util clamping is cpu opp selection. So we can use the capacity system opp to cover all possible clamping. Let us map the util clamping to corresponding opp capacity. [ALPS04128327] sched/core: uclamp: extend cpus cgroup controller
[Detail]
The cgroups CPU controller allows to assign a specified (maximum)
bandwidth to the tasks of a group. However this bandwidth is defined and
enforced only on a temporal base, without considering the actual
frequency a CPU is running on. Thus, the amount of computation completed
by a task within an allocated bandwidth can be very different depending
on the actual frequency the CPU is running that task.
The amount of computation can be affected also by the specific CPU a
task is running on, especially when running on asymmetric capacity
systems like Arms big.LITTLE.
With the availability of schedutil, the scheduler is now able
to drive frequency selections based on actual task utilization.
Moreover, the utilization clamping support provides a mechanism to
bias the frequency selection operated by schedutil depending on
constraints assigned to the tasks currently RUNNABLE on a CPU.
Give the above mechanisms, it is now possible to extend the cpu
controller to specify what is the minimum (or maximum) utilization which
a task is expected (or allowed) to generate.
Constraints on minimum and maximum utilization allowed for tasks in a
CPU cgroup can improve the control on the actual amount of CPU bandwidth
consumed by tasks.
Utilization clamping constraints are useful not only to bias frequency
selection, when a task is running, but also to better support certain
scheduler decisions regarding task placement. For example, on
asymmetric capacity systems, a utilization clamp value can be
conveniently used to enforce important interactive tasks on more capable
CPUs or to run low priority and background tasks on more energy
efficient CPUs.
The ultimate goal of utilization clamping is thus to enable:
- boosting: by selecting an higher capacity CPU and/or higher execution
frequency for small tasks which are affecting the user
interactive experience.
- capping: by selecting more energy efficiency CPUs or lower execution
frequency, for big tasks which are mainly related to
background activities, and thus without a direct impact on
the user experience.
Thus, a proper extension of the cpu controller with utilization clamping
support will make this controller even more suitable for integration
with advanced system management software (e.g. Android).
Indeed, an informed user-space can provide rich information hints to the
scheduler regarding the tasks its going to schedule.
This patch extends the CPU controller by adding a couple of new
attributes, util.min and util.max, which can be used to enforce tasks
utilization boosting and capping. Specifically:
- util.min: defines the minimum utilization which should be considered,
e.g. when schedutil selects the frequency for a CPU while a
task in this group is RUNNABLE.
i.e. the task will run at least at a minimum frequency which
corresponds to the min_util utilization
- util.max: defines the maximum utilization which should be considered,
e.g. when schedutil selects the frequency for a CPU while a
task in this group is RUNNABLE.
i.e. the task will run up to a maximum frequency which
corresponds to the max_util utilization
These attributes:
a) are available only for non-root nodes, both on default and legacy
hierarchies
b) do not enforce any constraints and/or dependency between the parent
and its child nodes, thus relying on the delegation model and
permission settings defined by the system management software
c) allow to (eventually) further restrict task-specific clamps defined
via sched_setattr(2)
This patch provides the basic support to expose the two new attributes
and to validate their run-time updates. However, we do not actually
allocated clamp groups and thus the write calls added by this patch
always returns -EINVAL. Following patches will provide the missing bits.

[ALPS04128327] sched/core: uclamp: map TASKs clamp values into CPUs clamp groups
[Detail]
Backport from linux power commit 463e02d2a755("sched/core: uclamp:
map TASKs clamp values into CPUs clamp groups")
Utilization clamping requires each CPU to know which clamp values are
assigned to tasks that are currently RUNNABLE on that CPU.
Multiple tasks can be assigned the same clamp value and tasks with
different clamp values can be concurrently active on the same CPU.
Thus, a proper data structure is required to support a fast and
efficient aggregation of the clamp values required by the currently
RUNNABLE tasks.
For this purpose we use a per-CPU array of reference counters,
where each slot is used to account how many tasks require a certain
clamp value are currently RUNNABLE on each CPU.
Each clamp value corresponds to a "clamp index" which identifies the
position within the array of reference couters.

Lets introduce the support to map tasks to "clamp groups".
Specifically we introduce the required functions to translate a
"clamp value" into a clamps "group index" (group_id).
Only a limited number of (different) clamp values are supported since:
1. there are usually only few classes of workloads for which it makes
sense to boost/limit to different frequencies,
e.g. background vs foreground, interactive vs low-priority
2. it allows a simpler and more memory/time efficient tracking of
the per-CPU clamp values in the fast path.
The number of possible different clamp values is currently defined at
compile time. Thus, setting a new clamp value for a task can result into
a -ENOSPC error in case this will exceed the number of maximum different
clamp values supported.

[ALPS04128327] sched/core: uclamp: extend sched_setattr to support utilization clamping
[Detail] The SCHED_DEADLINE scheduling class provides an advanced and formal model to define tasks requirements which can be translated into proper decisions for both task placements and frequencies selections. Other classes have a more simplified model which is essentially based on the relatively simple concept of POSIX priorities. Such a simple priority based model however does not allow to exploit some of the most advanced features of the Linux scheduler like, for example, driving frequencies selection via the schedutil cpufreq governor. However, also for non SCHED_DEADLINE tasks, its still interesting to define tasks properties which can be used to better support certain scheduler decisions. Utilization clamping aims at exposing to user-space a new set of per-task attributes which can be used to provide the scheduler with some hints about the expected/required utilization for a task. This will allow to implement a more advanced per-task frequency control mechanism which is not based just on a "passive" measured task utilization but on a more "active" approach. For example, it could be possible to boost interactive tasks, thus getting better performance, or cap background tasks, thus being more energy efficient. Ultimately, such a mechanism can be considered similar to the cpufreqs powersave, performance and userspace governor but with a much fine grained and per-task control. Lets introduce a new API to set utilization clamping values for a specified task by extending sched_setattr, a syscall which already allows to define task specific properties for different scheduling classes. Specifically, a new pair of attributes allows to specify a minimum and maximum utilization which the scheduler should consider for a task. BACKPORT: security: allow using Clang's zero initialization for stack variables
Upstream commit f0fe00d4972a8cd4b98cc2c29758615e4d51cdfe. In addition to -ftrivial-auto-var-init=pattern (used by CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL now) Clang also supports zero initialization for locals enabled by -ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero. The future of this flag is still being debated (see https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45497). Right now it is guarded by another flag, -enable-trivial-auto-var-init-zero-knowing-it-will-be-removed-from-clang, which means it may not be supported by future Clang releases. Another possible resolution is that -ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero will persist (as certain users have already started depending on it), but the name of the guard flag will change. In the meantime, zero initialization has proven itself as a good production mitigation measure against uninitialized locals. Unlike pattern initialization, which has a higher chance of triggering existing bugs, zero initialization provides safe defaults for strings, pointers, indexes, and sizes. On the other hand, pattern initialization remains safer for return values. Chrome OS and Android are moving to using zero initialization for production builds. Performance-wise, the difference between pattern and zero initialization is usually negligible, although the generated code for zero initialization is more compact. This patch renames CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL to CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_PATTERN and introduces another config option, CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_ZERO, that enables zero initialization for locals if the corresponding flags are supported by Clang. x86: Fix early boot crash on gcc-10, third try
commit a9a3ed1eff3601b63aea4fb462d8b3b92c7c1e7e upstream. ... or the odyssey of trying to disable the stack protector for the function which generates the stack canary value. The whole story started with Sergei reporting a boot crash with a kernel built with gcc-10: Kernel panic — not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: start_secondary CPU: 1 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/1 Not tainted 5.6.0-rc5—00235—gfffb08b37df9 #139 Hardware name: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. To be filled by O.E.M./H77M—D3H, BIOS F12 11/14/2013 Call Trace: dump_stack panic ? start_secondary __stack_chk_fail start_secondary secondary_startup_64 -—-[ end Kernel panic — not syncing: stack—protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: start_secondary This happens because gcc-10 tail-call optimizes the last function call in start_secondary() - cpu_startup_entry() - and thus emits a stack canary check which fails because the canary value changes after the boot_init_stack_canary() call. To fix that, the initial attempt was to mark the one function which generates the stack canary with: __attribute__((optimize("-fno-stack-protector"))) ... start_secondary(void *unused) however, using the optimize attribute doesn't work cumulatively as the attribute does not add to but rather replaces previously supplied optimization options - roughly all -fxxx options. The key one among them being -fno-omit-frame-pointer and thus leading to not present frame pointer - frame pointer which the kernel needs. The next attempt to prevent compilers from tail-call optimizing the last function call cpu_startup_entry(), shy of carving out start_secondary() into a separate compilation unit and building it with -fno-stack-protector, was to add an empty asm(""). This current solution was short and sweet, and reportedly, is supported by both compilers but we didn't get very far this time: future (LTO?) optimization passes could potentially eliminate this, which leads us to the third attempt: having an actual memory barrier there which the compiler cannot ignore or move around etc. That should hold for a long time, but hey we said that about the other two solutions too so... Stop the ad-hoc games with -Wno-maybe-initialized
commit 78a5255ffb6a1af189a83e493d916ba1c54d8c75 upstream. We have some rather random rules about when we accept the "maybe-initialized" warnings, and when we don't. For example, we consider it unreliable for gcc versions < 4.9, but also if -O3 is enabled, or if optimizing for size. And then various kernel config options disabled it, because they know that they trigger that warning by confusing gcc sufficiently (ie PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES). And now gcc-10 seems to be introducing a lot of those warnings too, so it falls under the same heading as 4.9 did. At the same time, we have a very straightforward way to _enable_ that warning when wanted: use "W=2" to enable more warnings. So stop playing these ad-hoc games, and just disable that warning by default, with the known and straight-forward "if you want to work on the extra compiler warnings, use W=123". Would it be great to have code that is always so obvious that it never confuses the compiler whether a variable is used initialized or not? Yes, it would. In a perfect world, the compilers would be smarter, and our source code would be simpler. That's currently not the world we live in, though. FROMLIST: add support for Clang's Shadow Call Stack (SCS)
This change adds generic support for Clang's Shadow Call Stack, which uses a shadow stack to protect return addresses from being overwritten by an attacker. Details are available here: https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ShadowCallStack.html Note that security guarantees in the kernel differ from the ones documented for user space. The kernel must store addresses of shadow stacks used by other tasks and interrupt handlers in memory, which means an attacker capable reading and writing arbitrary memory may be able to locate them and hijack control flow by modifying shadow stacks that are not currently in use. ANDROID: don't enable TOOLS_SUPPORT_RELR in all{mod, yes}config
We can't have this option enabled by default in all{mod, yes}config builds
because the tools might not support RELR. Follow the pattern used elsewhere
in the kernel and specify "depends on !COMPILE_TEST" in order to prevent it
from being turned on in these builds.

BACKPORT: arm64: Add support for relocating the kernel with RELR relocations
RELR is a relocation packing format for relative relocations. The format is described in a generic-abi proposal: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/generic-abi/bX460iggiKg/discussion The LLD linker can be instructed to pack relocations in the RELR format by passing the flag --pack-dyn-relocs=relr. This patch adds a new config option, CONFIG_RELR. Enabling this option instructs the linker to pack vmlinux's relative relocations in the RELR format, and causes the kernel to apply the relocations at startup along with the RELA relocations. RELA relocations still need to be applied because the linker will emit RELA relative relocations if they are unrepresentable in the RELR format (i.e. address not a multiple of 2). Enabling CONFIG_RELR reduces the size of a defconfig kernel image with CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE by 3.5MB/16% uncompressed, or 550KB/5% compressed (lz4).
